Oshkosh North, Merrill Middle School to start all virtual classes Thursday - WBAY

OSHKOSH, Wis. (WBAY) - Oshkosh Area School District officials announced Monday afternoon that students at Merrill Middle School and Oshkosh North will be doing virtual classes effective immediately.

In addition, those schools will start classes on Thursday, September 3 instead of Tuesday, September 1.

As of this publication, no other schools in the district were listed as having different start dates, or all virtual classes.

The change to all virtual classes comes due to what district officials describe as staffing limitations and circumstances beyond their control.

The delay in starting is due to the distribution of student Chromebooks, which district officials say will take place in a drive-thru pick-up format on Tuesday and Wednesday for students.

In a letter posted to the district’s website Monday for Merrill Middle School students, officials say they should pick up their Chromebooks at the school’s playground area between 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Tuesday, and from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Wednesday. Click here for further instructions on how to pick up your student’s Chromebook.

Oshkosh North students in Group B should pick theirs up on Tuesday, while Group A students should pick up their Chromebooks on Wednesday. More details for the families of high school students to pick up Chromebooks can be found by clicking here.

The letters posted to the district’s website on Monday say each school will return to Hybrid Learning as soon as their staffing situation allows.

No student at either school will report to school for in-person learning until further notice, according to the district.

The letters posted on the website announcing the changes were dated August 31, with times of 3:30 p.m. and 4 p.m. listed at the top of the documents.

Police find loaded weapon under front car seat: Middleburg Heights Police Blotter - cleveland.com

worldinmiddleeast.blogspot.com

MIDDLEBURG HEIGHTS, Ohio

Drug paraphernalia: Engle Road

An officer at 11:16 a.m. Aug. 18 saw a car with very dark window tint on the front windshield and front side windows as it left the Extended Stay on Rosbough Drive. The driver did not use the car’s turn signal.

The officer checked the license plate and found that the registered owner had an active warrant with Medina. The car, which he followed, then slowly crossed the yellow line. It also slowed and tried to turn around in a driveway apron. That is when the officer activated the cruiser’s lights and siren.

As he reached the car, the officer quickly noticed an “overwhelming” odor of marijuana emanating from the car and observed various drug paraphernalia -- such as a scale, torch, plastic bands and sorting board -- on the passenger’s lap in plain view.

The driver said they had smoked marijuana outside the car.

The driver was the registered owner, who willingly got out of the car. Although hesitating to answer, the driver said he had an unloaded pistol in the rear compartment of the car. He was placed in handcuffs.

During a pat-down, the officer found very large amounts of cash in his front left pocket, with stacks of bills separately banded together. The driver said the money totaled about $5,000. The money was placed in the cruiser, witnessed by another officer.

All passengers were removed from the car due to the weapon and marijuana. The front-seat passenger also had an active warrant. Officers checked both warrants, which the reported agencies denied.

Officers searched the car. Two scales, a large torch, three small bags and one larger bag of marijuana, sandwich bags, a plastic sorting board, a pair of scissors, a large fold of cash and a bag of pills were found.

Looking underneath the passenger seat, an officer found a pistol with a laser sight and extended magazine. He removed the magazine and a round was ejected, meaning the weapon was loaded while in transport.

A backpack in the back seat held several plastic sandwich bags. In the rear trunk was the unloaded “pistol.” An empty drum magazine was found under multiple boxes of shoes.

The driver said the loaded gun was his and that the passenger was unaware it was there. The driver was charged with improperly handling a loaded firearm in a car and arrested.

He was taken to the police station, where the counted money amounted to $8,700. The department also will pursue drug-trafficking charges.

Theft: Engle Road

An officer went to Unique Home Solutions at 9:43 a.m. Aug. 25 about a stolen catalytic converter. The company van had been parked overnight in the rear parking lot. When it was started that morning, it made a loud and unusual noise. When checked, it was found that the noise was due to the missing catalytic converter

Theft: Bardbury Avenue

A resident went to the police station at 7:53 a.m. Aug. 24 about items missing from his work truck, which had been parked in his driveway the night before. When he went to the Dominion Energy truck that morning, the driver’s door was unlocked and the passenger door locked. His laptop bag was open and a laptop, charger and mouse were missing. He said there was no damage to the truck or his home.

Property damage: Barriemore Avenue

A resident told an officer that his car alarm had sounded at 2:40 a.m. Aug. 14 while the car was parked in his driveway. Police went to the scene, but there was no damage to the car. The owner opened the car at that time with his key fob.

The next morning, however, his son tried opening the driver’s side door with a key. Half of the lock assembly fell from the door and the car alarm sounded. A responding officer also saw the damage to the lock.

The owner told police that he earlier had found visible damage to his home’s side door locks, which he repaired. He did not file a police report about that incident, which had occurred two weeks earlier.

The officer advised him of future action he may take around his property to help deter such issues.

Receiving stolen property: Engle Road

An officer at 8:22 a.m. Aug. 28 saw a car back into a parking spot at Motel 6. He randomly checked the car’s license plate and found that it had been stolen from Lakewood.

The officer and one from Lakewood looked at security video involving those associated with the car the night before. They learned that the room’s occupants were to be evicted from the property and if they would not leave, would face trespassing charges.

A Lakewood tow truck also arrived. The man who answered the door was arrested, since he was the one who drove the car in the videos. A woman, two teens and four young children were also in the room. The woman packed their belongings and left willingly.

Found property: Glenridge Avenue

A resident found a cell phone Aug. 22 in the bushes near a fence next to her detached garage. She checked with neighbors, who said it was not theirs. She placed it in a bag without touching the phone and called police.

She said her home had been broken into a few weeks ago, and she thought the phone may be related to that incident. The phone was placed into evidence without anyone touching it.

Theft: Normandie Boulevard

Police went to an Islander apartment Aug. 19 about a stolen license plate. The victim said she last saw the plate on her car at 10:30 p.m. Aug. 19. She said she returned to her car at 8:15 that night and noticed her rear license plate and its bolts were missing. The car was parked in the complex’s lot.

Stifling heat, brief relief possible ahead of expected front on the horizon - KBTX

worldinmiddleeast.blogspot.com

BRYAN, Texas (KBTX) - The week starts on a frustratingly enough: Another Heat Advisory has been issued (rightfully so) for heat index possibly bumping up to 110° this afternoon. Even after 9 o’ clock, we saw several spots already exceeding 100. Take care and know this is some “next level” heat we will have to deal with for one more afternoon!

We remain incredibly hot and humid to start the week, but we may see some relief as early as late Tuesday. The bigger system looks to arrive after Labor Day.
We remain incredibly hot and humid to start the week, but we may see some relief as early as late Tuesday. The bigger system looks to arrive after Labor Day.(KBTX)

Tuesday starts similarly, and thanks to a healthy overnight south breeze, we likely only dip to about 80°. We may well see the Heat Advisory extend right into Tuesday with similar conditions expected, and only isolated storms possible both Monday and Tuesday afternoon.

Name of the game for the remainder of the week - keep an eye on the radar. A weak disturbance will roll off the main jetstream and try to drag a cold front across the state, sparking up showers and storms each day. For now, most of that looks to stay to our north, but we may be able to get some of these storms to sneak into our area Tuesday night into Wednesday.

Right now, we’ll call it about a 30-40% chance, but that’s our ticket to some cooler weather if we’re going to get any at all through the end of the week. Otherwise, things will get a touch more bearable with highs in the upper 90s and a small chance for pop up showers and storms through the end of the Labor Day weekend.

Speaking of, we expect a pretty typical scene for the unofficial last weekend of summer. Plenty of heat, a mix of clouds and sun, and a couple afternoon storms possible each day. We may find a bit more activity on the bookends of the weekend, particularly Saturday.

Then, eyes turn to what should be the first real taste of fall in the Brazos Valley.

A "piece" of the jetstream will roll off the main flow early this week, popping up storms and creating a modest cold front that will try to dip into Central Texas. For now, the front looks to stay to our north, but we may see some storms coming our way as early as late Tuesday.

A larger, more potent trough of low pressure should affect the Brazos Valley and a large part of the Lower 48 by the middle of next week. A line of storms, and some cooler, drier weather could be in its wake. Stay tuned!

Careful! Don’t scare it away. A large upper level trough (this time, the full dip in the jetstream) comes our way and will likely be enough to actually give us a good push of cooler, drier air by the middle part of next week. Still plenty of details to iron out, but widespread 60s for lows and highs near 90 still look reasonable for a large portion of next week. Stay tuned...

Police: Suspect chased, shot 16-year-old victim in front of witnesses - ABC17News.com

Click here for updates on this story

HARRISBURG, PA (WPMT) — The 45-year-old Harrisburg man accused of shooting and killing a 16-year-old boy on Saturday afternoon did so in front of multiple witnesses, one of whom was attempting to help the victim as the suspect began firing, according to the criminal complaint affidavit filed in the case by Harrisburg Police.

Orlando Duarte, of the 600 block of N. 17th Street, is charged with criminal homicide and illegal possession of a firearm in the incident, which occurred Saturday in the area of N. 18th and North streets in the city, according to police.

Duarte is accused of shooting and killing a 16-year-old male victim that police have not identified. The incident began around 12:45 p.m., according to police.

A witness told police they were sitting on their porch on the 1700 block of North Street when the victim emerged from an alley. The victim was naked and claimed to have been raped by a man who was chasing him with a gun, the witness told police.

The witness attempted to get a towel from a neighbor to help the victim cover himself when an armed man, later identified as Duarte, came running east on North Street, spotted the victim, and began firing in his direction, the witness told police. The witness said they took cover to avoid gunfire, while the victim fled north across the street.

The witness identified Duarte from a photo lineup as the suspect seen shooting at the victim, police say.

A second witness told police they were walking from a corner store on 18th and Forster streets when they heard someone yelling for help, and later heard a gunshot. As the witness approached the 1800 block of Forster Street, they saw the victim lying on the ground. The victim yelled for help, but it was “weaker,” the witness reported.

The suspect, whom the witness later identified as Duarte after being shown a photo lineup, was standing over the victim, the witness reported. As the witness looked on, Duarte allegedly shot the victim two more times in the upper body.

The witness then fled and called 911, police say.

Police responding to the initial shooting report were directed eastbound from the crime scene by witnesses and found Duarte on Forster Street, where he was taken into custody. Duarte allegedly attempted to flee from police but fell. When he did, a .22-caliber Smith & Wesson revolver fell onto the street, police say.

A third witness at the crime scene told police they knew Duarte and had seen the victim in his apartment earlier in the day. The witness directed police to Duarte’s residence on the 1700 block of N. 17th Street.

Police entered the apartment after noting the entrance was unlocked. After making certain no one else in the residence needed help, police observed documents containing Duarte’s identification, a shell casing on a night table next to a bed, and two letters on the bed.

One of the letters, addressed to the victim, said, “If you’re reading this I am dead,” and went on to express his love for everyone, police say.

Police obtained a search warrant and collected several items from the apartment, including the letters and a box of .22-caliber shells, police say.

Police attempted to interview Duarte, who refused to answer questions. All he would say, according to police, is that he believed the victim was 18 years old.

Duarte is a register sex offender convicted in 2012 of involuntary deviate sexual intercourse, unlawful contact or communication with a minor, and aggravated indecent assault, police say.

GoPro leaks Hero 9: front color display, removable lens, price - DroneDJ

worldinmiddleeast.blogspot.com

The GoPro Hero 9 has appeared to leak in product images that show off the new front color display, removable lens, the price, and a relocated USB-C port. A promotional image was also leaked by GoPro themselves. The new leak suggests GoPro will introduce the front color display, putting it in line with DJI’s Osmo Action.

Front color display and price

The front display has been the most talked-about missing feature on the Hero 8 after DJI released its Osmo Action camera earlier in the year.

From the first set of images, the display looks to be pushed back into the camera a little, likely reducing the chance of it being smashed if the Hero 9 was dropped or hit while recording. We can also see the front recording light has been moved above the new larger display, with the GoPro logo and front mic staying in the same location.

Taking a look at the image GoPro leaked, we can see the front display will allow you to see what the camera is recording, along with the recording time, SD card status in the top left, and battery status in the top right. The image also shows us the price of the GoPro Hero 9 bundle, which is Singaporean $680 (US$500). This comes included with a 32GB SD card, the Handler mount, a magnetic swivel clip, and an extra rechargeable battery. That’s US$50 above the RRP for the GoPro Hero 8 bundle.

Removable lens

While looking at the new GoPro Hero 9 images, I noticed that the lens looks to have a gap between it and the camera like GoPros before the Hero 8 had. From this, it appears GoPro has gone back on its unibody design and will now allow users to put a new lens on if they happen to break it. Good job, GoPro!

Removable lens?

Relocated USB-C connector

Something a little smaller, but was found to be a bit of an issue on the GoPro Hero 8, is the location of the USB-C port. Every time you wanted to use the camera while plugged in, the battery and SD card was exposed, which could lead to the battery coming out or both being damaged.

In the new round of leaks, it appears GoPro has moved the USB-C port to the other side just under the power/mode button. The new door looks just the right size for a USB-C connector as well.

It’s great to see GoPro fixing all the major issues hardware-wise with the camera rather than trying to add radical new features. From previous leaks, it looks like DJI will also be adding new modes to the camera and improved photo and video settings.

Taking care of business on the home front - nj.com

worldinmiddleeast.blogspot.com

The pandemic has caused many changes in our daily lives. People are spending more time at home. You grab a cup of coffee -- at home. You get a pizza delivered -- at home. You check your laptop -- at home. During a lock down, just about everything is done at home.

It is amazing what home time can do to your focus. Suddenly, your plans to renovate your kitchen now stare you in the face -- all day long. Your computer needs some expert attention. And, outside, that tree has grown new limbs, and they are brushing against the house.

It’s time for some home front changes. Things that you have ignored now take center stage. All through the good times, you have procrastinated. You put off things that need doing. Now that you are spending more time at home, these things are pressing for attention.

•••

“I go where bucket trucks cannot go,” says Fred Pauser. He is describing what his Fred’s Tree Service can do. “I climb up the tree, use ropes, and lower the cut off tree limbs down to my ground man.”

There are tree removal services that use heavy equipment to reach the high limbs of a tree. But that bucket equipment is mounted on a truck that requires ground space in order to operate. In some situations, there is no space for trucks with buckets. That’s when Fred’s Tree Service can come to the rescue.

Fred has more than 20 years experience, and he’s licensed and insured. He uses climbing and roping methods to tackle jobs, and he can arrange chipping and stump grinding if necessary.

Fred’s Tree Service is based in Hackettstown, and he will travel up to 20 miles to handle jobs. For tree work in a tight space, call him at 908 366-4169. Estimates are free.

Megan’s Affordable Computer Repair is based in Hampton. She will travel a few miles throughout the local area, including as far as Flemington.

“I work on any type of computer, including laptops,” Megan says. “The diagnosis is free, and repairs usually take no more than a couple of days.”

Computer problems can be frustrating. Sometimes, it’s some small thing. Other times, it can be major. Most of us simply insist that the computer work. We have neither the time nor the interest to troubleshoot, much less the knowledge to repair. And that is precisely where Megan brings her expertise to bear on the problem.

“I love building computers from scratch,” she says. She understands and works with the components until the machine is ready for use.

Contact Megan’s Affordable Computer Repair at 908-763-3305.

MSI Plumbing & Remodeling is a woman-owned and operated business serving properties throughout central New Jersey for more than 25 years. Anne Thornton runs this well-known business and she is very active in the communities served.

“We lost 90% of our business when the pandemic hit,” Anne says. “But we waited it out. Once people were more educated, the phones started ringing again. Now, we’re back to normal.”

MSI has more than a dozen employees--plumbers, electricians, carpenters, painters, tilers, designers, remodelers and more. Multiple vans fan out from the Lebanon location every day to take care of appointments in private homes as well as in businesses and commercial buildings.

“The lock down created lots of pent up demand,” she notes. “It was like people were saying, now that I’m home all day, I’ve got to get these things fixed.”

Being home all day means additional strain on systems. The air conditioning system might need additional maintenance. Water is used more -- the washing machine hoses might need cleaning or replacement. The heating system can use a tune up before winter arrives. And always check the water heater -- look for leaks and rust.

People are home more, so they pay more attention to systems they have been taking for granted. And that kitchen renovation, long wished for, now presses anew at every meal.

“We are always looking at new items (coming on the market),” Anne says. She talks about touchless faucets, ultraviolet lighting that can kill viruses and bacteria, and a one piece toilet featuring quiet flushes and a heated seat. How about a power generator?

Anne maintains an active Facebook page, and she frequently posts short videos with useful tips. In these, she is hands-on with lots of practical information.

One of these videos illustrates the use of a fire extinguisher. Another shows how to clean a shower head. Others take viewers through cleaning dryer vents, or which plunger does the best job on that clogged drain pipe. Then there is the show-and-tell on plumbing valves and air filters.

Also, she has published a book, Anne Thornton’s Insider’s Guide To Home Improvement. It’s in over-sized format, well-illustrated, with more than 100 pages of useful and how-to tips describing the maintenance of a home.

She covers a structure from roof to basement and everything between. She has information on chimneys, wells and septic systems, along with details on all those appliances people have -- refrigerators, stoves, garbage disposals, washing machines and dryers, and more. The book can be ordered through Amazon or direct from Anne.

Political Gumbo: A View from the Front – Pasadena Now - Pasadena Now

worldinmiddleeast.blogspot.com

By now, everybody who stays up to date on local happenings has read some version of the story of the fatal shooting of Anthony McClain.
These are the facts.

The car McClain was riding in was pulled over shortly before 8 p.m. on Aug. 15 on North Raymond Avenue. The driver was stopped for not having a front license plate.

McClain fled during the traffic stop and one police officer opened fire. One bullet struck McClain in the upper torso. Police recovered a gun at the scene and are awaiting the results of tests being performed on that weapon.

The incident is tragic for all involved, no matter who you fault for the shooting.

But the beginning of this incident is also indicative of major problems we have in this country. And one of those problems is far too many Black men are being stopped by police for virtually meaningless offenses.

Yes, driving without a front license plate is an infraction of the state Vehicle Code, but seriously, a police officer needs to make a U-turn to stop a car that does not have a front plate?

During a virtual community meeting, police Chief John Perez said there is not an edict in the department to stop Black men driving in cars with tinted windows and no front plates, a point that the contact officer also made during the traffic stop.

But now there have been two tragic local incidents resulting from traffic stops of young African-American men driving vehicles with no front plates and having window tints. In each incident, police decided to turn around and pursue the car at a high rate of speed before initiating the traffic stop.

The first involved Christopher Ballew — albeit not a fatal incident, thank goodness. However, Ballew was repeatedly struck with a baton during his encounter with police after he was initially stopped for the lack of a front license plate and having tinted windows.

In both cases, the incidents involved police officers who had been working in Pasadena for a short time. While we don’t know much about the police officers in the McClain incident, we do know that the officers in the Ballew incident were lateral transfers from the Sheriff’s Department and Bakersfield. It has to be pointed out Chief Perez was not running the department when the Ballew incident occurred.

The officers in both incidents have only been working with the department for five years or less.

In at least 19 states front license plates are not required. On July 1, a law went into effect in Ohio allowing drivers to go without a front plate.

As a matter of fact, some newer cars by Porsche, Audi, Tesla and Mercedes don’t even have a spot to mount a front license plate, and in many cases the window tint comes with the car.

Yes, I do have a hard time believing that police officers in any department are making U-turns and driving at high rates of speed to stop the folks in the high-end cars without plates.
There is no edict to make these stops locally, and some officers have used this infraction to profile young African-American men.

Perez said he is willing to discuss police policy. That said, it’s time he asks his officers why they feel it is necessary to make U-turns and travel at high rates of speed to make contact with African-American men for a fix-it ticket at a time when racial tensions are running high.

Yes, the City Council passed police oversight, but the absolute best oversight any city can have is policies and understandings that prevent bad situations from occurring in the first place.

'When Facebook CEO slammed Apple in front of the company's 50,000 employees' - Times of India

worldinmiddleeast.blogspot.com
(File Photo)

NEW DELHI: Seems Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg is really angry with Apple. According to a report in BuzzFeed News, Zuckerberg dissed Apple during a recent company-wide meeting. While replying to a question on Apple control over what's allowed on iPhones, Facebook CEO reportedly said that the company has this "unique stranglehold" as a gatekeeper on what gets on phones. He added that the Apple's App Store "blocks innovation, blocks competition" and "allows Apple to charge monopoly rents."
He is said to have made the comments in front of over 50,000 Facebook employees via webcast. "That’s innovation that could really improve people’s lives," Zuckerberg said as per the report. "And Apple’s just balking at it," he is said to have added.
The report goes on to add that Zuckerberg also slammed Apple over the privacy changes in the upcoming version of its mobile operating system, iOS14. In fact, in a blog post earlier this week, Facebook warned its advertisers of the potential effects of privacy changes in iOS 14. "We understand that iOS 14 will hurt many of our developers and publishers at an already difficult time for businesses. We work with more than 19,000 developers and publishers from around the globe and in 2019 we paid out billions of dollars. Many of these are small businesses that depend on ads to support their livelihood," said the blog post.
The report adds that Zuckerberg was also specifically asked about the iPhone maker's recent decision to bar certain gaming apps from the App Store, including Microsoft xCloud and Facebook Gaming application. Earlier this month, Facebook's Gaming app finally made it to the App Store after almost six months of rejection. Facebook said it accepted Apple’s demand to change its Gaming app to be able to bring it to iPhone and iPad users. Apple on its part said that App Store rules do not allow third-party apps to distribute games as a separate platform.
Expressing frustration with Apple over the issue, Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg had said in a statement, "Unfortunately, we had to remove gameplay functionality entirely in order to get Apple’s approval on the stand-alone Facebook Gaming app."
Coming to the Facebook company-wide meeting, Zuckerberg also commented on Apple's ongoing legal war with Fortnite maker Epic Games. He reportedly termed Apple's threat to block the Epic Game's Unreal Engine as “just an extremely aggressive move" that was "quite problematic."

GoPro HERO 9 Black might come with a color front display - SlashGear

worldinmiddleeast.blogspot.com

GoPro may have started or at least popularized the whole action cam market but it has definitely seen better days. From competitors and copycats that have eaten away at its market share to the COVID-19 pandemic that hit its core business hard, GoPro is moving to find its footing in a different kind of world. That would, it seems, involve trying to appeal to a different audience group, one that would love to see what the camera sees when that camera is pointed right back at them.

Action cams are great for recording footage from your point of view but some have also used them for taking selfie videos or vlogging. The problem with the latter is that you can’t really see what you’re recording from that point of view because GoPro cameras’ front displays are simple LCD screens for displaying camera settings.

WinFuture’s latest information suggests that the next GoPro, the GoPro HERO 9 Black, will be the first of its kind to sport a color display on the front. It will still be small compared to the main screen on the back but it could at least give users some preview. That said, even the site admits there aren’t many details on what that new screen.

Other leaked details include 5K support in the future, perhaps via a firmware update. The usual fold-out mounting arms can also be seen, which makes the little camera compatible with mounts even without a case.

This is definitely a big and important shift for GoPro’s HERO action cameras, though not an unsurprising one. The company is now forced to look into uses and audiences that it may not have considered back in the days when action cams and even drones were are their peak. Recently, GoPro enabled its cameras to be used as ad hoc USB webcams to ride on the video conferencing wave and even launched its own live-streaming service to woo a new wave of people trying to live stream from their homes.

Bellbrook’s Ford moves to front of pack at Bob Schul meet - Dayton Daily News

worldinmiddleeast.blogspot.com

Ford didn’t know much about the field of runners he was competing against Saturday. And he prefers to keep it that way.

“Honestly, most of (what I think about during a race) is about my friends and how nice they’ve been to me. They’re not counting on me to win, but they look forward to hearing how I do. It’s strong encouragement. I know no matter how I do they know I tried my best.”

Last season’s Schul Invitational had 268 runners in the big school division. The field was trimmed to comply with COVID-19 guidelines. Masks were mandatory on site. Social distancing between teams took place both at the start and at the finish. Starting boxes were spaced further apart compared to previous meets. Runners were immediately guided to designated team areas once crossing the finish line. Spectators were not permitted at this year’s meet.

In the girls’ big school race, Lebanon senior Faith Duncan trailed Oakwood junior Grace Hartman for most of the first two miles. Duncan made her move with two turns remaining, including the second-to-last turn around a gate to enter the track, and steadily pulled away to win in 18:20.6.

Bellbrook's Takumi Ford won the big school title at the Bob Schul Invitational. Greg Billing/CONTRIBUTED

“Grace raced super tactically. When she went to the front I wasn’t expecting it,” Duncan said. “I thought she’d try to sit on me a little bit. I had to adapt.

“I tried to put in little surges where I could to wear her out. I could hear she was getting tired but she held on long enough to get to a turn or a tangent before me. I didn’t want to wait to sit back and kick at the end.”

Hartman, who finished second at the D-II state meet the past two seasons, finished in 18:35.4. The next finisher in the 108-runner field came in 56 seconds after Hartman.

Duncan won the Schul as a freshman and again as a junior. She battled through injuries as a sophomore and spent much of last season doing low-risk training to fully recover.

“Today I was hoping my time would be a lot faster,” Duncan said. “I have three big goals for each race I want to check off. Win, set the course record and be able to make our top seven in guys. Only one of those was met today.”

For the record, Lebanon’s No. 7 runner crossed the line in 18:04.2.

Lebanon won the boys big school title with 27 points. Waynesville was second with 53 and Oakwood third at 97.

The Warriors were led by senior Jacob Corbett (17:06.7), who finished third. Senior Carter Davidson, sophomore Jacob Fleig, freshman Calvin Kilgallon and sophomore Jesus Trejo claimed fifth place through eighth, while senior Joey Shupe rounded out the top 10.

Oakwood’s girls, paced by Hartman and sophomore Bella Butler’s 2-3 finish, won the big school title by one point over Lebanon. Senior Hannah Moulton also cracked the top 10 in fifth.

In addition to Duncan, Lebanon senior Hope Carr was eighth and junior Abby Taylor was 10th.

West Liberty-Salem swept the boys and girls small-school team and individual titles. Junior Megan Adams finished first for the girls and junior Dylan Lauck won for the boys.

Women, middle class protest Lukashenko in Belarus - Xavier Newswire

BY MO JUENGER

Belarusian citizens protested at the residence of President Aleksander Lukashenko this week after weeks of controversy surrounding the Aug. 9 election that confirmed another term for Lukashenko in a landslide.

Lukashenko has been president of Belarus since 1994 and has worked to strengthen ties with Russia. He now maintains long-time connections to Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Protestors are demanding that Lukashenko resign and claim that the election results were largely falsified.

Reports by the New York Times indicate that there has been little violence perpetrated by the more than 200,000 protestors in past weeks. Protestors have been met with substantial police violence.

As protestors demanded Lukashenko exit his palace last weekend, his press secretary released footage of the president holding an assault rifle and wearing a bulletproof vest while surrounded by armed guards. Lukashenko was not seen exiting the palace at any point throughout Sunday, when protests became largest.

Putin and his administration have been increasingly vocal about his support for Lukashenko. Lukashenko, throughout protests, has noted infrequently that he plans to wait for protests to end. He has detained several foreign journalists and Belarusian activists.

Political adversaries of Lukashenko and some protestors have claimed that they do not aim to break the relationship between Russia and Belarus, with many citing the annexation of Crimea after Ukraine’s similar 2014 protests.

Protestors have claimed that they are unsure what consequences of Lukashenko’s continuing presidency might be but are worried about his authoritarian leanings.

“It’ll be like North Korea here,” Belarusian activist Andrei Korsakov said. He stated that protesting on the streets is what most activists can do in the increasingly dangerous political regime.

Lukashenko has jailed many protestors who voice opposition to his presidency, including three protestors and advocates who intended to campaign against him.

The protests are largely comprised of middle-class women, a group not typically involved in Eastern European political activism. Many of these women claim that they were spurred to become involved because of their distaste with Lukashenko’s handling of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Our generation has lost so much,” one anonymous woman said of her experience in Belarus’ middle class. “Our children will have to live here.”

Though police violence has been rampant throughout the protests, many videos have shown Belarusian police refusing to use force against women. A video taken at a protest on Aug. 23 showed a group of activist mothers who broke through a line of riot police without physical retaliation.

It is unclear how long protests will continue, but many say they will not end their activism until Lukashenko resigns. So far, the president has made no concessions and claims he will wait until protests end naturally.

Protester who held cookout in front of mayor's home speaks - KATC Lafayette News

worldinmiddleeast.blogspot.com

LAFAYETTE — The woman arrested after barbecuing in front of Mayor-President Josh Guillory's home on Saturday says she will use her new platform to get attention to the case of Trayford Pellerin.

Pellerin, 31, was shot and killed by Lafayette police officers outside an Evangeline Thruway convenience store on August 21. That shooting led to mass protests over the following week.

Tara Laxey, 46, was booked on disturbing the peace and obstruction of public passages charges after her cookout in front of the mayor's home. Laxey, who has been involved in previous protests surrounding both the Pellerin case and the Guillory Administration's now-reversed decision to close four Northside recreation centers, says she wanted to use the barbecue as a chance to open dialogue with Guillory.

According to Laxey, members of Guillory's administration knew about her plans.

"(Chief of Minority Affairs) Carlos Harvin called me (Saturday) morning asking me if I was still going to do it," Laxey said. "I told him, 'yes,' I was. He said, "I'd like to be invited. I'd like to be able to maybe speak if you come and try to heal because the Northside is in mourning over Tray.' I said, 'You know what, I invite you. Come."

Laxey says she picked the location because she and others in the community felt that Guillory wasn't comfortable meeting them on their turf. They hoped the offering of grilled hamburgers and hot dogs would be welcoming to Guillory and his neighbors and open dialogue about the Northside's concerns.

"We wanted him to feel a bit uncomfortable," Laxey said. "We feel that on the Northside of town, we have been ignored. Even through the budget, the recreation centers and the 37 parks and recreation jobs that are being lost, the way (Guillory) called Trayford 'the individual,' the way that he didn't take it upon himself to call Trayford's mom to give his condolences, we feel like he's ignored us (and) that he doesn't want to represent us."

Laxey says Harvin left after getting a call from Guillory. According to her, police arrived minutes later to end her protest and to take her into custody.

Laxey maintains the protest cookout was peaceful. Guillory described the incident as "inappropriate" and said it was a "tragedy" that his wife and children had to "witness" Laxey barbecuing in front of their home.

"There was not shouting, no megaphone action, no signs, no protesting, (and we were) not on his lawn," Laxey said. "Everything was done on the street and not directly in front of his house, but between him and his next door neighbor's house," Laxey said.

Laxey says she and other protesters are resorting to other peaceful, non-violent forms of demonstration because it seems to them that Guillory is ignoring the pleas they've made during city and parish council meetings. Still, Laxey says she's not surprised her barbecue protest attracted as much attention from police and others as earlier demonstrations had.

"It directly affected our mayor-president," Laxey said. "The choices he makes, even with the budget or trying to close the rec centers, are basically dehumanizing Trayford. It needed to be done, and I'm not surprised he tried to make an example out of me with calling the police."

Laxey bonded out late Saturday night after her friends raised enough money to post bond. As a condition of her release, she cannot go near Guillory's home. Still, Laxey says she will continue to go to council meetings to make her voice heard. In the meantime, she has this message for Guillory and members of the city and parish councils.

"Shame on you," Laxey said. "That's it. Shame on you. You're our leaders. You represent us. Where have you been with us in this process with losing Trayford--the mourning process? We're angry. We're hurt. We're confused. We're not getting the answers--and I understand there is an investigation--but where are y'all? Where are y'all?"

New GoPro Hero 9 Black pic leak seemingly confirms front color screen - TechRadar

worldinmiddleeast.blogspot.com

We're coming into September – the time of year that GoPro usually reveals its next action camera. And the leaks and rumors have already begun to fly about the GoPro Hero 9 Black.

In July, a leaked image of a GoPro camera's front panel was revealed on Reddit, showing off a large square cutout that could indicate the ninth generation GoPro may come with a front display similar to that of the DJI Osmo Action. That has now seemingly been confirmed by what appear to be leaked official product shots of the upcoming GoPro Hero 9.

German publication Winfuture – with a rather impressive track record of reliable leaks – has shown off what they claim to be "official" product images of the upcoming action camera, with several of them showing off color displays on the front and back.

There's no indication of whether that upgraded front display will be used for video previews or for displaying shooting parameters (like the current monochrome front display on the GoPro Hero 8 Black), but this change is one way for GoPro to attract more customers.

Moving ahead

Other than the larger color front screen, the rest of the GoPro Hero 9 seems to be identical to the Hero 8 Black. So what more could GoPro do to attract and keep its customers?

Winfuture claims there's 5K video support coming to the Hero 9 "in the future", as per some "documents" the publication has laid its hands on. There's no other concrete evidence to support this, so we'd suggest taking this news with a pinch of salt. No other technical details about the camera have been revealed as yet.

We also still have no idea how much the camera will cost or when it will start shipping, but if GoPro sticks to its usual timetable of a September reveal, we'll know everything soon enough.

Middle-earth design contest with Oscha Slings: WINNER - TheOneRing.net

August 30, 2020 at 10:35 am by greendragon  -

Big thanks to everyone who entered the contest run by our good friends at Oscha Slings, to come up with a new Middle-earth design! We hear there were many lovely entries, and it was very hard to make a choice; but we can now announce the winner. Here’s what the folks at Oscha tell us:

‘We’d like to thank everyone who entered the competition, it was wonderful to see the range of ideas and talents! The winner is *drumroll*….

‘Cari Johnston with her (yet unnamed) mirrored depiction of the journey to Lake-town and the Lonely Mountain, from The Hobbit. It’s such a clever design, with so many story-telling elements, that has been well executed to work as a baby sling.

‘We could see a lot of enthusiasm for designs that were already on our list, so hopefully you will eventually get something that you’ve been dreaming of, for instance horses, eagles, and  Gandalf!

‘We hope you can agree that Cari is a worthy winner, and that you will look forward to seeing the design woven!’

Congratulations to Cari, and thanks to all who entered. Don’t forget to check out the many wonderful Middle-earth goodies (including face masks!) at Oscha Slings.
