Taking care of business on the home front - nj.com

worldinmiddleeast.blogspot.com

The pandemic has caused many changes in our daily lives. People are spending more time at home. You grab a cup of coffee -- at home. You get a pizza delivered -- at home. You check your laptop -- at home. During a lock down, just about everything is done at home.

It is amazing what home time can do to your focus. Suddenly, your plans to renovate your kitchen now stare you in the face -- all day long. Your computer needs some expert attention. And, outside, that tree has grown new limbs, and they are brushing against the house.

It’s time for some home front changes. Things that you have ignored now take center stage. All through the good times, you have procrastinated. You put off things that need doing. Now that you are spending more time at home, these things are pressing for attention.

“I go where bucket trucks cannot go,” says Fred Pauser. He is describing what his Fred’s Tree Service can do. “I climb up the tree, use ropes, and lower the cut off tree limbs down to my ground man.”

There are tree removal services that use heavy equipment to reach the high limbs of a tree. But that bucket equipment is mounted on a truck that requires ground space in order to operate. In some situations, there is no space for trucks with buckets. That’s when Fred’s Tree Service can come to the rescue.

Fred has more than 20 years experience, and he’s licensed and insured. He uses climbing and roping methods to tackle jobs, and he can arrange chipping and stump grinding if necessary.

Fred’s Tree Service is based in Hackettstown, and he will travel up to 20 miles to handle jobs. For tree work in a tight space, call him at 908 366-4169. Estimates are free.

Megan’s Affordable Computer Repair is based in Hampton. She will travel a few miles throughout the local area, including as far as Flemington.

“I work on any type of computer, including laptops,” Megan says. “The diagnosis is free, and repairs usually take no more than a couple of days.”

Computer problems can be frustrating. Sometimes, it’s some small thing. Other times, it can be major. Most of us simply insist that the computer work. We have neither the time nor the interest to troubleshoot, much less the knowledge to repair. And that is precisely where Megan brings her expertise to bear on the problem.

“I love building computers from scratch,” she says. She understands and works with the components until the machine is ready for use.

Contact Megan’s Affordable Computer Repair at 908-763-3305.

MSI Plumbing & Remodeling is a woman-owned and operated business serving properties throughout central New Jersey for more than 25 years. Anne Thornton runs this well-known business and she is very active in the communities served.

“We lost 90% of our business when the pandemic hit,” Anne says. “But we waited it out. Once people were more educated, the phones started ringing again. Now, we’re back to normal.”

MSI has more than a dozen employees--plumbers, electricians, carpenters, painters, tilers, designers, remodelers and more. Multiple vans fan out from the Lebanon location every day to take care of appointments in private homes as well as in businesses and commercial buildings.

“The lock down created lots of pent up demand,” she notes. “It was like people were saying, now that I’m home all day, I’ve got to get these things fixed.”

Being home all day means additional strain on systems. The air conditioning system might need additional maintenance. Water is used more -- the washing machine hoses might need cleaning or replacement. The heating system can use a tune up before winter arrives. And always check the water heater -- look for leaks and rust.

People are home more, so they pay more attention to systems they have been taking for granted. And that kitchen renovation, long wished for, now presses anew at every meal.

“We are always looking at new items (coming on the market),” Anne says. She talks about touchless faucets, ultraviolet lighting that can kill viruses and bacteria, and a one piece toilet featuring quiet flushes and a heated seat. How about a power generator?

Anne maintains an active Facebook page, and she frequently posts short videos with useful tips. In these, she is hands-on with lots of practical information.

One of these videos illustrates the use of a fire extinguisher. Another shows how to clean a shower head. Others take viewers through cleaning dryer vents, or which plunger does the best job on that clogged drain pipe. Then there is the show-and-tell on plumbing valves and air filters.

Also, she has published a book, Anne Thornton’s Insider’s Guide To Home Improvement. It’s in over-sized format, well-illustrated, with more than 100 pages of useful and how-to tips describing the maintenance of a home.

She covers a structure from roof to basement and everything between. She has information on chimneys, wells and septic systems, along with details on all those appliances people have -- refrigerators, stoves, garbage disposals, washing machines and dryers, and more. The book can be ordered through Amazon or direct from Anne.
