MIDDLEBURG HEIGHTS, Ohio
Drug paraphernalia: Engle Road
An officer at 11:16 a.m. Aug. 18 saw a car with very dark window tint on the front windshield and front side windows as it left the Extended Stay on Rosbough Drive. The driver did not use the car’s turn signal.
The officer checked the license plate and found that the registered owner had an active warrant with Medina. The car, which he followed, then slowly crossed the yellow line. It also slowed and tried to turn around in a driveway apron. That is when the officer activated the cruiser’s lights and siren.
As he reached the car, the officer quickly noticed an “overwhelming” odor of marijuana emanating from the car and observed various drug paraphernalia -- such as a scale, torch, plastic bands and sorting board -- on the passenger’s lap in plain view.
The driver said they had smoked marijuana outside the car.
The driver was the registered owner, who willingly got out of the car. Although hesitating to answer, the driver said he had an unloaded pistol in the rear compartment of the car. He was placed in handcuffs.
During a pat-down, the officer found very large amounts of cash in his front left pocket, with stacks of bills separately banded together. The driver said the money totaled about $5,000. The money was placed in the cruiser, witnessed by another officer.
All passengers were removed from the car due to the weapon and marijuana. The front-seat passenger also had an active warrant. Officers checked both warrants, which the reported agencies denied.
Officers searched the car. Two scales, a large torch, three small bags and one larger bag of marijuana, sandwich bags, a plastic sorting board, a pair of scissors, a large fold of cash and a bag of pills were found.
Looking underneath the passenger seat, an officer found a pistol with a laser sight and extended magazine. He removed the magazine and a round was ejected, meaning the weapon was loaded while in transport.
A backpack in the back seat held several plastic sandwich bags. In the rear trunk was the unloaded “pistol.” An empty drum magazine was found under multiple boxes of shoes.
The driver said the loaded gun was his and that the passenger was unaware it was there. The driver was charged with improperly handling a loaded firearm in a car and arrested.
He was taken to the police station, where the counted money amounted to $8,700. The department also will pursue drug-trafficking charges.
Theft: Engle Road
An officer went to Unique Home Solutions at 9:43 a.m. Aug. 25 about a stolen catalytic converter. The company van had been parked overnight in the rear parking lot. When it was started that morning, it made a loud and unusual noise. When checked, it was found that the noise was due to the missing catalytic converter
Theft: Bardbury Avenue
A resident went to the police station at 7:53 a.m. Aug. 24 about items missing from his work truck, which had been parked in his driveway the night before. When he went to the Dominion Energy truck that morning, the driver’s door was unlocked and the passenger door locked. His laptop bag was open and a laptop, charger and mouse were missing. He said there was no damage to the truck or his home.
Property damage: Barriemore Avenue
A resident told an officer that his car alarm had sounded at 2:40 a.m. Aug. 14 while the car was parked in his driveway. Police went to the scene, but there was no damage to the car. The owner opened the car at that time with his key fob.
The next morning, however, his son tried opening the driver’s side door with a key. Half of the lock assembly fell from the door and the car alarm sounded. A responding officer also saw the damage to the lock.
The owner told police that he earlier had found visible damage to his home’s side door locks, which he repaired. He did not file a police report about that incident, which had occurred two weeks earlier.
The officer advised him of future action he may take around his property to help deter such issues.
Receiving stolen property: Engle Road
An officer at 8:22 a.m. Aug. 28 saw a car back into a parking spot at Motel 6. He randomly checked the car’s license plate and found that it had been stolen from Lakewood.
The officer and one from Lakewood looked at security video involving those associated with the car the night before. They learned that the room’s occupants were to be evicted from the property and if they would not leave, would face trespassing charges.
A Lakewood tow truck also arrived. The man who answered the door was arrested, since he was the one who drove the car in the videos. A woman, two teens and four young children were also in the room. The woman packed their belongings and left willingly.
Found property: Glenridge Avenue
A resident found a cell phone Aug. 22 in the bushes near a fence next to her detached garage. She checked with neighbors, who said it was not theirs. She placed it in a bag without touching the phone and called police.
She said her home had been broken into a few weeks ago, and she thought the phone may be related to that incident. The phone was placed into evidence without anyone touching it.
