Stationary Front in the South Leading to Flooding Concerns - WeatherNation

worldinmiddleeast.blogspot.com

As a ridge of high pressure has developed over the Gulf of Mexico, the dewpoints and moisture values in the south have soared. This allows for lots of moisture to get rung out within heavy rain storms which ride the stationary boundary.

The stationary boundary has been locked into place the last several days, the rainfall will continue to lead to localized flooding threats through the end of this week. The lack of upper level wind doesn’t allow for much movement away from the boundary which leads to those training and flooding storms.

The rainfall totals over the last week range between 2″ and 12″ across the south. With this kind of moisture already saturating the ground, any additional heavy rain can lead to the the flash flooding potential which has been highlighted by the Weather Prediction Center (WPC).

As more rain continues to ride the stalled front, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) has highlighted an area of low pressure along the boundary to monitor. If this low moves over back out into the open water along the Eastern United States, we could see some tropical characteristics being taken on from the surface feature.

What his means: strengthening wind along with flooding rain being wrapped around the system. The convection is likely to be on the northern and eastern side of this system but coastal impacts along the US will be felt regardless if it becomes tropical or not.
