The Bristol Township School District revealed their plans to turn the Benjamin Franklin school into a middle school.
Under the district’s ongoing facilities plan, the former school-turned-administration building on Mill Creek Road is envisioned as becoming a new middle school to replace the aging Franklin D. Roosevelt Middle School on Veterans Highway (Route 413). The move has been long discussed but not finalized.
The district presented a sketch plan before Bristol Township Council this month.
Chris Jenson, vice president at engineering firm T&M Associates, showed off the sketch plan that still needs to move through the land development process before it becomes a reality.
“This is just an introduction so people can get their eyes on the plan,” he said.
David Schrader, of Schrader Group Architecture, explained that the plan calls for a full renovation of the Franklin building, a two-story, 33,000-square-foot addition, and updates to the facade and sports fields. The plans call for a new bus loop connected and a separate drop-off point for students driven by parents.
The total building would take up 115,000-square-feet and be able to accommodate 850 students with room for more, Schrader said.
Jenson said the renovations would connect the middle school campus to neighboring Mill Creek Elementary School through pathways. The district is looking to consolidate the two parcels of land into one.
In 2012, the district released a facilities plan that included closing Roosevelt Middle School, reopening the Franklin school, and renovating Neil A. Armstrong Middle School.
Last year, the district administration moved from offices at the Franklin site to a new building at the former Clara Barton Elementary School that was renovated.
