Birmingham City Schools announced Monday afternoon they have canceled the middle school sports of football and volleyball for the fall of 2020 amid coronavirus concerns.
Interim School Superintendent Dr. Mark Sullivan said the system will continue monitoring public health reports for guidance in assessing future sports activities during the upcoming academic year.
Last week, Mobile County also postponed middle school sports.
Both districts will start the school year Sept. 1 with nine weeks of virtual school.
Earlier Monday, Greene County and Sumter County canceled all of their sports for the fall.
Last week, the AHSAA’s Central Board of Control approved the on-time start to the fall sports season next month.
