BRUNSWICK, Ohio -- Going, going, gone.
In the three weeks since demolition of Visintainer Middle School began, there is virtually nothing left of the venerable building, except a concrete pad, a gaping basement area and huge piles of debris.
According to Salvatore Grida, director of business affairs for the Brunswick City Schools, the materials are being hauled to Akron to be recycled.
“The material that can’t be recycled is being hauled to a landfill,” Grida said. “The goal is to get the material hauled off site for the next few weeks and move on to demolition of Edwards (Middle School) gymnasium. This will allow for grading of the transportation area.”
The initial work drew crowds of onlookers, but as the first week ended, only a few continued to come by. All but the most northern part of the building was down by then. The next week saw mostly clearing of the downed structure into separate piles. Carefully, because the new middle school building was so close, the final part of Visintainer was brought down.
Soon, work will begin on the parking lot for the new school building, which is far more visible from Pearl Road now that the Visintainer building has come down.
While the gymnasium will be removed, the rest of the Edwards building is likely to still be in use this year because of delays in construction of the new school as a result of the COVID-19 lockdown.
The initial Visintainer building (Center School) was erected in 1949. The Edwards building (formerly Brunswick High School), opened in 1921.
One of the arched doorways in the oldest part of the Edwards building is slated to become the façade of the new “old school” building being constructed at Heritage Farm by the Brunswick Area Historical Society.
