Luke Kuechly is officially retired from professional football but he may not be moving on from the NFL just yet. The Carolina Panthers announced Kuechly is considering joining the team as a pro scout -- a strong fit for a linebacker that spent countless hours studying the game and watching film during his All-Pro days in Carolina.
When Kuechly announced his retirement in January, he mentioned he still wanted to be involved in the organization in some capacity. He may have found that role in the front office.
"I love the game of football, I love everything about it, I love the studying aspect, I love the team aspect," Kuechly said during an interview with NBC Sports Network in April (via the Charlotte Observer). "I'm gonna miss the interaction, the guys, you know, every day. I know when the season comes around I'm going to have that pit in my stomach knowing that, man, I wish I was still out there.
"I think you look at it in the sense that you have a long life to live, what's the best thing for right now? Hopefully I can find a way to stay involved in football somehow."
Panthers head coach Matt Rhule hoped Kuechly would join his coaching staff in Carolina, but remaining with the organization is vital for the franchise going forward. Kuechly recorded 1,092 tackles, 12.5 sacks, 67 passes defensed and 18 interceptions during his exceptional eight-year career. His seven Pro Bowl selections are the most in franchise history and he was a First Team All-Pro five times.
Kuechly eclipsed 100 tackles in every season he played, leading the league in tackles twice. He was the 2012 AP Defensive Rookie of the Year, the 2013 AP Defensive Player of the Year and a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame 2010s All-Decade Team.
