Calling middle school authors: Richardson program will help students create picture books for the library's collection - The Dallas Morning News

Richardson Public Library officials are looking to add to their collection this summer. The catch? They are seeking picture books created by local middle-schoolers that will be added to the library’s shelves.

Richardson students entering grades 5 through 9 this fall will have the opportunity to create a picture book that will become part of the collection at the Richardson Public Library, according to an announcement by the city. The program will help students learn how to write and illustrate a picture book through a series of virtual meetings and workshops with a professional author and a graphic artist hosted by the library this summer.

Students must be a Richardson resident and have a Richardson Public Library card. Registration is required by June 19 and can be made by calling 972-744-4358 although an email address must be provided.

Currently, participants can pick up their starting supplies at the youth services help desk with optional supply folders available until June 19. Mandatory cover art paper may be picked up from June 22 through 26.

The schedule for the program is as follows:

June 5 — Learn It! Professional children’s author, Nancy Churnin, will present a young writer’s workshop.

June 7 - June 13 — Brainstorm It! Discussing ideas about characters, plot, and other story element ideas.

June 14 - June 20 — Rough It! Writing and reviewing the first rough draft.

June 22 - June 26 — Picking up cover art paper from youth services.

June 26 - Illustrate It! Graphic artist Julie Flandorfer will offer drawing tips and page layout suggestions.

June 28 - July 4 — No meeting.

July 10 — Revise It! Checking in with Ms. Churnin to review the next draft.

July 12 - July 17 — Proof It! Learning publishing guidelines.

July 18 - July 25 — Finish It! Working on details to complete the book. Check in for edits, feedback, and final approval by July 25.

Completed books may be dropped off on or before July 31 at noon. More information is available on the 2020 Young Authors webpage.
