Western Middle School’s girls and boys team’s were each second to none at the Greenwich Middle School Championships, recently.
In the boys’ championship game, Western Middle School registered a 62-39 win over Eastern Middle School. Donte Adams scored 18 points and Blake Martin totaled 18 points, including five 3-pointers, to power Western to the win. Western Middle School held a five-point halftime lead.
Cooper Edwards finished with 11 points, while Xavion Faison scored six points in the winning effort.
On the girls’ side, Western Middle School edged Eastern Middle School in the title game, 44-40.
Led by Julia Monteiro and Emma Abbazia, Eastern took a 10-5 lead after the first quarter. Western had a strong second quarter and took a 20-14 lead into halftime, behind the impressive play of Emma Sollenne, Flynn Tauber and Alyssa Gath.
Trailing 31-27 after three quarters, Eastern scored eight unanswered points to start the fourth quarter, taking a 35-31 lead. Megan Geiger and Monteiro led Eastern’s charge early in the fourth quarter.
Baskets by Camdyn Nelson and Gath knotted the score at 35-35. Later in the quarter, a 3-pointer from Eastern’s Ayanna Davenport tied the score at 40-40, but Nelson converted a runner from the baseline, giving Western the lead for good at 42-40.
The win gave the Western girls middle school team its third championship banner in a row. The championship squad included: Nelson, Gath, Sollenne, Tauber, Emily Utzinger, Madison Utzinger, Anne Clarke, Charlotte Langhorne, Stella Thibeault and Alex Cimador.
