South Plainfield Middle School Students Present STEM-Based Projects - TAPinto.net

SOUTH PLAINFIELD, NJ – Stop-motion animation videos created by South Plainfield Middle School students were presented during the board of education’s Jan. 22 meeting.

Stop-motion animation is the art of creating objects and filming their movements frame-by-frame and eighth graders in Carolyn White’s STEM class recently worked together to create stop-motion animation public service announcement videos that exemplified a theme of digital footprint awareness.

As part of the unit, students learned filming procedures and how to create a storyboard and construct sets, props, and characters.Working in groups, the students then made videos using a variety of mediums, including clay, poseable figures, Lego people, whiteboards, and paper drawings.

“Stop motion animation is a technique used in film production to create a moving picture from a series of still photographs or images. The process involves using fixed objects that are secured in one position, then photographed with a camera,” eighth grader Chase Donovan told the South Plainfield Board of Education.

“For the project we created storyboards that were like scripts for the movie. We had to plan out our scenes, decide our characters, and write the plot of the story. Once that was complete, we picked out the medium that we used to create the stop motion animation video,” added classmate Christopher Downey. “This project was a great way for us to show what we learned without taking a test.”

During the meeting, Christopher and Chase, along with classmates Luxy Ruiz Nicolas, Amelia Karch, Emily Guillen, Kayla Vargas, and Keira Farre also had the opportunity to demonstrate the techniques used to make their stop motion animation videos.

“We did some really great projects this year in our STEM class,” said Luxy.

“The students did a fantastic job in conveying the importance of building positive digital images and the impact that the traces left by one’s activity in a digital environment can have on a person’s reputation and future,” said White.
