AMHERST — A search has begun for a permanent principal for Amherst Regional Middle School.
Advertisements for the position, with a start date of July 1, have been posted online and in print, with a deadline of Feb. 28 to apply.
The school has had interim co-principals since July 2018, when Joseph Smith, previously a Crocker Farm Elementary School assistant principal and the principal of Leeds Elementary School, and Rebecca Sweetman, a middle school principal in Southbridge, were hired. Before that, the school had interim principal Patty Bode for the previous two years.
Superintendent Michael Morris said the search is focused on finding a principal, not a co-principal.
According to the advertisement, the areas of focus for the new principal are social-emotional programming and curriculum, technology integration, and social justice and restorative practices, as well as maintaining an advisory program that supports students with access to a supportive adult.
The middle school has an enrollment of 416 seventh and eighth graders from Amherst, Pelham, Leverett, and Shutesbury.
“The school offers a comprehensive curriculum and its goal is to encourage students to be lifelong learners, skillful communicators, creative thinkers, and responsible citizens,” the job posting states.
It also notes that the district is currently considering whether sixth-grade students should be moved to the middle school, and, “as such, a candidate should have a vision for middle-level education that can contribute to that dialogue.”
