River City Middle School raising funds for Make-A-Wish Idaho - Coeur d'Alene Press

POST FALLS — The students at River City Middle School aren’t just any students.

They’re Titans of Kindness.

“We’re trying to make the world a better place,” associated student body eighth grade representative Zoe Peterson said Tuesday.

These kindness-minded middle-schoolers are working to raise more than $3,000 to donate to Make-A-Wish Idaho to help pay for a special trip to Disney World for 6-year-old Eli Lathrop, a Post Falls boy who has spent more than three years fighting acute lymphoblastic leukemia. The River City kids are selling Make-A-Wish Idaho T-shirts and stars and candy bars, and they'll have a big community bash on Thursday that will include a nacho bar and a lively game of dodgeball for all to play.

“Last year, we were able to present a check for $3,000 in front of the entire school," said Post Falls School Resource Officer Annette Clark. "These kids were just so excited and applauding. It's really cool to see how excited they get."

This is the second year the entire school is participating in the Titans of Kindness challenge for Make-A-Wish Idaho. Previously, the school held contests that resulted in students winning prizes and a spirit day, but last year they decided to focus their efforts on Make-A-Wish Idaho, a nonprofit that grants wishes for kids with terminal and chronic conditions. The funds raised last school year helped grant two wishes — one little boy went to Disneyland, and a little girl got to swim with dolphins.

“The kids, they really are truly kind, and they really care about doing stuff for others," said ASB adviser and U.S. history teacher Janey Ortega. "To see them be generous and give back when it doesn’t benefit them at all, it’s simply about being kind and helping someone else and making a difference in someone’s life, it just makes you feel good about our future."

ASB president and eighth-grader Raya Zirker, who sold T-shirts at a table with her ASB peers during lunchtime, said this school-unifying project means a lot to the students.

"We want to keep that tradition going and we want to do it in the years to come," she said. "The students here have been so awesome, and the staff are really helpful too. Everyone wants to be a part of this. It’s really cool how it brings us all together."

She said people might stereotype kids of her generation as being self-centered, "but we’re a lot more than that."

“We want to help each other out, and if you look deeper, you’ll see there’s a lot more to us," Raya said.

River City's fundraising event, Dinner and Dodgeball, will be held at the school Thursday with the nacho bar starting at 5 p.m. Dinner is $5 per person or $20 for a family. Dodgeball will begin at 6 p.m. It's $2 per person to sign up to play. Teams can be six to eight people and players can sign up as individuals or be on a team. Raffles and other games will also be available.
