Plano middle school student, a cancer patient, says she was bullied over her appearance - The Dallas Morning News

A Plano middle school student who is battling a rare form of cancer became the victim of an alleged bullying attack by a classmate, according to her mother’s Facebook page and a report from WFAA-TV (Ch. 8).

A’Myah Moon, 11, and her mother, Syreeta Smith, say the Bowman Middle School sixth-grader has faced taunts and bullying over her appearance after chemotherapy treatments caused her to lose her hair. A’Myah was diagnosed a little over a year ago, according to the TV station.

The harassment escalated last week when another student chased A’Myah around the school gym and pulled off her wig in front of other classmates, Smith said in a Facebook post.

The Dallas Morning News reached out to Smith, who has not yet responded to a request for comment.

“I just want to leave school forever,” A’Myah told WFAA. Smith said the sixth-grader had to pick up her wig off the floor and was so upset that she locked herself inside a restroom stall.

“Shout out to the parents for teaching their kids right because my baby was torn,” she wrote in a Feb. 13 Facebook post. “We were torn. She wanted to keep her illness to herself and her wig was her security blanket. That was all took away for what!???”

But Smith also wrote that the school “did everything to make us feel better.” She said she hopes some good will come from what her daughter has endured.

According to WFAA, a relative of the girl who bullied A’Myah called the family to apologize.

Plano ISD issued a statement Friday, after about two dozen of the family’s supporters rallied outside Bowman with anti-bullying signs, WFAA reported.

“The safety and wellbeing of our students in Plano ISD are of greatest priority to our school and district teams," the statement read. “Bowman Middle School and Plano ISD administrators have been responding to the situation and are working closely with the involved students and their parents.”

The statement continues, “While we cannot discuss disciplinary measures as it relates to a specific student or students, our response to any behavioral concerns is always in accordance with district policy and the Plano ISD Student Code of Conduct. Plano ISD students are expected to treat one another with respect and civility and we will continue to reinforce this expectation.”

Smith posted a photo of A’Myah on Feb. 3, saying her daughter’s hair was growing.
