Here's where Gainesville City Schools is looking to build a new middle school - Gainesville Times

Gainesville City Schools is another step closer toward getting its long-awaited second middle school. 

Superintendent Jeremy Williams gave Gainesville’s Board of Education a first look at the proposed 23-acre site during a board meeting on Wednesday, Feb. 5.

If the education special purpose local option sales tax is approved on March 25, $32 million will go toward adding a new middle school in the area of Gainesville Exploration and Mundy Mill academies.

The proposed site is located off of McEver Road, across from the old Free Chapel site. 

Williams said 25% of the property will need to be annexed. He expects to close on the property by the end of the month and break ground in a year. 

At around 1,800 students, Gainesville Middle is above its capacity of 1,475. Williams said this new school would automatically draw away 600-650 students, once it opens. 

If all goes as planned, the current fifth graders would likely be the first group to start the eighth grade at the new middle school. 

Adrian Niles, Gainesville chief operations officer, said the preliminary checklist from the Georgia Department of Education has gone well. 

“We’re glad to report that the state so far has seen that everything does look good,” Williams said. “For us it meets the need from a location standpoint. It meets the need from an overcrowding standpoint.”

The Board of Education will share renderings of the new middle school and vote on the site’s closing agreement during the next board meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 18, at New Holland Knowledge Academy.
