San Diego middle-schoolers to interview space station astronaut via satellite - The San Diego Union-Tribune

Jessica Meir, the UC San Diego graduate who is conducting research aboard the International Space Station, will conduct a live-streamed interview on Monday with students from two San Diego middle schools.

Roughly 150 students from Fulton Middle School and Memorial Preparatory for Scholars and Athletes have been drafting questions that some of them will pose to Meir by satellite as she orbits the Earth at 17,500 mph.

The interview will occur while students are gathered at UCSD’s Scripps Institution of Oceanography, where Meir earned a doctorate in marine biology.

Scripps says the students already have expressed interest in how Meir sleeps in space and whether she gets homesick. They also want to know whether she was afraid when she bolted into orbit aboard a Soyuz spacecraft in September.

The Union-Tribune posed a similar question to Meir a couple of weeks before her launch, asking whether she considered herself to be fearless.

“I’m not sure if I think of myself that way,” said Meir, who is 42. “I think some healthy fear is usually a good thing. But I think as astronauts we really rely on our training so much in any situation that you might consider to be risky.

“We go back to those procedures that we performed again and again and again. That really helps us do what needs to be done in any dangerous or risky situation.”

As for being homesick, Meir said she will likely miss being able to experience nature. “To not have any of those plants and trees and the fresh air and water around you should affect me quite profoundly,” she predicted.

Meir made history in October when she and Christina Koch became the first all-female team to perform a spacewalk. They spent more than seven hours outside the space station, carrying out a variety of upgrades and alternations. The team received a congratulatory call from President Donald Trump during the spacewalk.

Meir, who will return to Earth this spring, has devoted most of her mission to conducting scientific research, much of it focused on finding ways for astronauts to stay healthy during long duration trips.

The public can view Monday’s live interview at UC San Diego’s Birch Aquarium in La Jolla, starting at 11:30 a.m. The university says the screening will be included as part of paid admission.
