Gresham student, 11, fatally hit by driver near his middle school, police say - OregonLive

A Gresham student was hit and killed by a driver Monday morning near his middle school, police say.

Gresham police Sgt. Tom Walker said the 11-year-old Dexter McCarty Middle School student was hit in a marked crosswalk on Southeast Hogan Road. A traffic light was in his favor at the time of the crash, Walker said.

The driver who hit the boy pulled over and has cooperated with investigators, Walker said. He or she was not in custody Monday morning.

The boy died at the scene, which was at Hogan Road’s intersection with Fifth Street. Neither the boy nor the driver has been publicly identified.

Dexter McCarty Middle School Principal John George wrote to families in a Facebook message that the school would have counselors on campus both Monday and Tuesday to help grieving staff and students. He reminded that the tragedy could lead to anxiety for some students, and asked them to watch their children for signs of distress, or signs that they might need more support.

Windy Simila, who lives across the street from the school, said she had been worried something like this would happen.

“It’s a dangerous corner,” she said. “It’s a problem all the time. At the beginning of the year, there was a car doing 100 miles per hour down our street at 5 p.m.”

Simila added that even in the morning, parents trying to get their children to school on time are driving faster than the posted 20 miles per hour speed limit. Coupled with the many students that jaywalk, she said the road has become increasingly risky.

Simila’s son goes to East Gresham Elementary School, which is right next to Dexter McCarty Middle School.

“I want to stand out there with a speed sign saying, ‘It’s 20 miles per hour,’” Simila said. “People regularly go at least 30 or 35.”

Monday was Dexter McCarty’s first day back from winter break. The school serves over 575 Gresham-Barlow School District students in grades six through eight, according to 2017 data.

The crash is under investigation.
