ROCKFORD (WREX) — Once the cold blast hits us today, we may not see temperatures above 20 degrees again until Wednesday. In between, prepare for a lot of bitter cold temperatures and harsh subzero wind chills.
The Arctic air arrives by the middle of this afternoon. Temperatures drop like a stone, going from the 30's to the teens by this evening. Overnight, we may just barely stay above zero. Sunday may just rise above the single digits. This should be our coldest day since the middle of November. Temperatures remain below 20 degrees until Wednesday, when we warm back to around freezing for a high. For reference, we usually are in the upper 20's, so this kind of air is at least 10 degrees below average.
In addition to the cold, wind chill values become very harsh at times. We'll see those drop to the teens below zero by this evening, and approach 20 degrees below zero overnight. When we get within 20 degrees below zero or colder with the wind chill, frostbite is possible within 30 minutes if you are not careful. Layer up and try to stay in a warm space out of the wind as much as possible.
We may not see wind chill values above zero again until Monday afternoon. By that point, wind chills may only be in the single digits, but at least they are above zero. The weather slowly warms from there. Tuesday may just get to 20 degrees, then we are in the 30's for the rest of the week. The warm-up may come with a chance for rain and snow showers between Thursday and Friday.
Looking ahead to the end of January, all signals point toward more average temperatures. Above average temperatures look to be confined toward the Eastern Great Lakes region, with below average temperatures across the Great Plains.
