Saudi Arabia Intercepts Missile From Yemen Rebels

Yemen's Houthi rebels fired a missile Tuesday at Saudi Arabia's capital, saying it was aimed at Riyadh's Yamama palace.

The Saudi-led coalition that has been battling the Houthis for nearly three years says it intercepted the missile, while Saudi state media said no one was hurt.

A November missile attack prompted the Saudi-led coalition to temporarily close air, land and sea access to Yemen. Saudi Arabia argued the move was necessary to ensure Iran could not send arms to the Houthis and further said it considered Iran's actions "an act of war."

Iran supports the rebels, but denies supplying them with weapons. Iran has also criticized Saudi Arabia for its military campaign in Yemen and what it called "regional bullying."

The Houthis took control of Yemen's capital, Sana'a, in late 2014, prompting the country's internationally recognized president, Abdu Rabu Mansour Hadi, to flee to Saudi Arabia. The Saudi-led coalition fought back in defense of Hadi's government, and the overall conflict has enacted a harsh humanitarian toll on the country's civilians.

The United Nations said Tuesday it has verified airstrikes killed 136 civilians and non-combatants were killed in the first half of December, and that since the conflict began it has documented a total of 5,558 civilians killed and 9,000 injured.

U.N. spokesman Rupert Colville urged all parties to respect obligations under international law to protect civilians.
