U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson says Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad and his family have "no role" in the country's future.
"The United States wants a whole and unified Syria with no role for Bashar al-Assad in the government," Tillerson told reporters in Geneva on the last leg of a week-long trip. "The reign of the Assad family is coming to an end. The only issue is how that should that be brought about."
Tillerson made the comments after what he called a "fruitful" discussion with the U.N. envoy to Syria, Steffan de Mistura. Mistura is expected to reconvene U.N.-sponsored peace talks in coming weeks in the wake of recent battlefield gains by Assad's Russian-backed forces.
Tillerson's talks in Geneva marked the end of a multi-nation tour that included previously unannounced stops Monday in Iraq and Afghanistan,
