North Olmsted Middle School celebrates gratitude week - cleveland.com

NORTH OLMSTED, Ohio -- Kindness is the key for North Olmsted Middle School’s WEB (Where Everybody Belongs) Leaders, which recently held a gratitude week at the Butternut Ridge Road building.

“We have a group of eighth graders who applied in seventh grade to be part of the WEB Leader team,” said eighth grade math teacher Erin Mohar, who is also a WEB coordinator. “It’s a national program but what we do is help transition our sixth graders to the middle school.

“Throughout the year we provide social and academic opportunities to just have a more positive environment in our school. Our leaders help basically come up with activities and help run those.”

Efforts during the recent gratitude week included sharing positive messages on the sidewalk and on the student lockers, encouraging students to watch related videos and complete the gratitude and kindness challenges, as well as collecting food donations.

In addition, WEB provided blank notecards for teachers to write appreciation notes to other staff members.

“We wanted to continue this trend of having a positive focus that was really explicit and direct with the kids,” said eighth grade science teacher Lindsay Sereika, who is also a WEB coordinator.

“It just set a positive tone. The biggest thing we focused on was the donation of food items, just kind having kids think about things bigger than themselves and create opportunities to make that happen.”

Zack Simpson said his group spread words of kindness to sixth graders, who were also reminded to be grateful for what they have.

“Throughout the week we did activities like positive notes on all the lockers,” Simpson said. “We also wrote notes to all the teachers we are grateful for. I feel we helped many people and kids realize how lucky they are and how grateful they should be.”

Eighth grade WEB Leader Amani Leasure said the effort is yielding positive results.

“I think we impacted the younger children positively because they enjoyed the games and activities we did with them,” Leasure said. “I also would like to believe that they paid attention to the anti-bullying week we had here at school.

“I’m seeing some changes, so that’s fantastic. I’m seeing them be kinder to their classmates too.”

The WEB effort was called “paramount” by Sereika, who noted its importance for students after dealing with the pandemic for more than a year and a half.

“We believe that really trying to connect with our students on different levels -- and not just academics -- is very important,” Sereika said. “The more we can model and show kindness within our school day, the better off our student will be.

“It’s something that we kind of pride ourselves doing on a daily basis not only in our leadership class but in our normal class as well. It’s got to be a little bit of both for students to be successful and grow into really well-rounded adults.”
