EDWARDSVILLE - Liberty Middle School Student-Athlete Leadership Team (S.A.L.T.) students had a unique guest speaker on Thursday.

Shawn Roundtree Jr., a former Liberty Middle School student and Edwardsville High School basketball player, came to the school to talk to S.A.L.T. about how to be a leader. While there, Roundtree shot a commercial with the students for the show “I Am Athlete.”

After EHS, Roundtree played basketball at Central Michigan University in 2019 and then played in the Georgian Basketball Super League in the country of Georgia. He was a 2020 All-Star and three-point contest winner and is currently an actor.

“I Am Athlete” is a podcast hosted by former NFL players Brandon Marshall, Chad Johnson, Fred Taylor and Channing Crowder. In the podcast the former players discuss several topics including mental health, depression and being an athlete. Roundtree said the commercial shot at Liberty Middle School is reenacting some of the most iconic moments from the show. He said the message is about why student-athletes struggle to find their identity after they finish their athletic journeys.

“There’s a transition period for athletes once they are no longer playing, and they have to figure out what’s next,” Roundtree said. “The 'real world' can seem foreign, and transitioning into a life where that sport isn’t there anymore can cause depression, confusion, anxiety and more. The goal is to get the attention of the 'I Am Athlete' to not only have a good laugh, but to welcome them to an important conversation.”

The commercial is yet to be finished, but editing should be complete by mid-week, according to Roundtree.

S.A.L.T is a group of student-athletes who have been chosen to participate in monthly meetings where they learn about leadership qualities, teamwork and positive behavior, according to Liberty Middle School Principal Allen Duncan. The students learn how to use their influence to promote positive change, Duncan said.

The students also help other organizations. S.A.L.T. has raised money for breast cancer awareness, hosted a 5k to raise money to sponsor families during the holidays and started a student fan section for athletic events, according to Duncan.

“The main goal is to develop personally as a leader and trailblazer and to use their influence to make their school a better experience for everyone,” Duncan said.
