Middle Tennessee will remain in Conference USA instead of further pursuing joining the Mid-American Conference, the school announced Wednesday. MTSU and Western Kentucky have been under consideration by the MAC for expansion. WKU has been far more eager to join the league, while MTSU had been hesitant.
“We greatly appreciate the interest other conferences have shown in our athletics program and in our university, as they are a testament to the overall excellence of our institution, both athletically and academically,” MTSU president Sidney McPhee said in a statement. “However, after careful consideration and due diligence, I am pleased to reaffirm our commitment to Conference USA.
“With the addition of four new members, C-USA offers a strong footprint in the South and Southwest, providing opportunities to develop new regional rivalries, while staying connected to traditional opponents that our fans want. Building on the conference’s storied history of success, I believe our continued affiliation offers our Blue Raider community the greatest opportunity for success and should enhance our fan engagement.”
Conference USA has lost nine members in recent weeks. Six joined the American Athletic Conference (Charlotte, FAU, North Texas, Rice, UAB, UTSA) and three went to the Sun Belt (Marshall, Old Dominion, Southern Miss). The league has replaced those schools by adding Liberty, New Mexico State, Sam Houston and Jacksonville State, putting the conference at nine members at the moment.
