Easton Area school bus with about 30 middle school students lands in Bushkill Creek - lehighvalleylive.com

UPDATE: Easton Area School District bus is pulled out of Bushkill Creek after crash (WATCH)

An Easton Area School District bus carrying about 30 children went through a guard rail and landed in the Bushkill Creek on Monday morning.

The bus rolled 25 feet down from the road into the creek shortly before 8 a.m. Nov. 8. The crash was just north of the blue bridge leading to the Karl Stirner Arts Trail on Bushkill Drive in Easton.

There were 29 students on board, according to Easton Area School District Superintendent David Piperato. Easton Area School District police officer Scott Casterline indicated the students attend middle school.

At least two students and the driver had to be lifted up the steep embankment one by one in a “stokes” basket, according to Easton Fire Chief Henry Hennings. These baskets are typically used to lift individuals up steep slopes when they’re not capable of climbing on their own.

The driver and two students were taken in an ambulance to St. Luke’s Hospital’s Anderson campus in Bethlehem Township, according to Piperato. Piperato said six students were taken in an ambulance to St. Luke’s Hospital - Easton campus. Five students were taken by their parents to St. Luke’s Easton, he said.

“We are receiving reports of ‘families arriving at Anderson’ but have no specific information,” Piperato said.

Easton Director of Safe Schools John Remaley wasn’t sure about the extent of the injuries, but said they initially don’t appear to be serious.

Easton Police Chief Carl Scalzo said the bus was headed north and veered to the right where the shoulder is somewhat elevated, then veered back across the opposite lane of traffic, through the rail, down onto the footpath and into the creek.

The drop is about 25 feet. The bus missed plowing into one of the many trees along the creekside, Scalzo said. He said the students are lucky because the crash could have been a lot worse.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation. The Easton Police Department will reconstruct the accident to try to determine the cause. Scalzo said video of the crash was provided by a vehicle following behind the bus.

The bus driver will be tested for drugs and alcohol, as is required in any crash by a commercial driver, Remaley said.

Many of the students were seen standing on the side of the road after the crash, patiently waiting for a new bus to arrive.

Some parents came to check on their children. The road was closed in the area of the crash so the parents parked a short distance away in the parking lot of the Union Fuel Co. at 700 Bushkill Drive.

Around 8:45 a.m. a fresh bus carried some students from the crash site to the area with the parents. Some parents could be seen hugging their children.

One boy told lehighvalleylive.com the experience was “kind of scary,” then gave a thumbs up and smiled before his mom drove him away.

Two tow trucks arrived on the opposite side of the creek. They pulled the bus across the creek and up the less steep western bank of the creek. It was out of the creek and towed away around noon.

The Easton police, fire and emergency squads assisted the school district police. Suburban EMS and Bethlehem Township EMS also responded.
