Cañon City Middle School students, faculty honor veterans during ceremony - Canon City Daily Record

Students and faculty of Cañon City Middle School gathered at the flagpole on Wednesday to honor veterans of the United States Military. Members of the American Legion were there to speak and perform various military honors.

“We have students with veterans who are family members, some students who may have lost service members and we have service members here at the building level,” said Principal Jesse Oliver. “Showing students that Veterans Day is important and what it means will help cement that this is not just a day off of school, but we are honoring special sacrifices by people in our community.”

Tim Grabin, a Navy veteran who served during Vietnam, played “To the Colors” on his bugle to open the ceremony while the flag-raising was performed by American Legion members Bill Hartless, Tom Buholtz, and Mike White. The Cañon City Middle School Choir then sang “The Star-Spangled Banner” to commemorate those who died in the armed forces.

“I’m proud to serve this country,” Grabin said. “So that we understand and never, ever forget the freedoms we have today. They don’t come easy. They’ve been paid with a price.”

Grabin was followed by others who had served in the armed forces in his address of the students. The United States Marines, Army, and Navy were all represented as the various American Legion members took the microphone and spoke to the captivated audience.

Marty Peek, a Marine Corp. veteran and National Guard member, was deployed to Iraq as an Engineer Platoon Leader and had several pieces of advice for the listening kids.

“Look into your family history.” Peek said, “Find the ones that served in Vietnam, that served in World War II, that served in Korea, that served in World War I and keep searching. Look for those family members that served in the military and talk to them.”

The ceremony was ended with the laying of the wreath by Theresa Brandt, the State President of Colorado American Legion, and taps were played by Phil Beckerich. The middle school students left the ceremony with a renewed respect for those that have served and died in service of the United States of America.
