MIDDLE SMITHFIELD TWP., Pa. - Pennsylvania State Police are investigating after a young man was found shot dead along the side of the road in Monroe County.
Officials say they responded to the area of Gingerbread and Arrowhead lanes in Middle Smithfield Township late Saturday night, around 11:30 p.m., for a report of multiple gunshots.
Pennsylvania State Police are investigating a shots fired incident that led to the death of a New Jersey teen in the area of Gingerbread and Arrowhead Lanes in Middle Smithfield Township.
Around 12:15 a.m. on Sunday, police say they located the body of Jaheem Keith Alston, 19, of Paterson, New Jersey.
“It’s tragic. I didn’t know a gentleman died,” Tommy Keener, who lives a few houses away from where Alston's body was found, told 69 News as he fought back tears.
"I wear my emotions on my sleeve. I’m sorry and I’m sorry for his family. But, we’re a strong community. We’re going to stand up, we’re Americans. We don't take this. We’ll find out who did it. We’ll prosecute them to the full extent of the law,” Keener added.
There's no word yet on what Alston's ties to the area might be.
Keener says he would never have expected for anything like this happen in the typically quiet neighborhood.
“It’s very sad. Why he was here at 11 o’clock, what might cause a gunshot wound,” Keener wondered.
“I’m totally totally shocked. I mean this is unnerving at best. I hope the police do a good job of investigating, which I’m confident they will but, I’m shocked and baffled,” he added.
The Monroe County district attorney's office and the coroner's office were called to the scene.
