Lakewood’s Harding Middle School using mural project to celebrate diversity - cleveland.com

LAKEWOOD, Ohio -- The power of representation on students isn’t lost on educators at Lakewood’s Harding Middle School, which is celebrating diversity through a monthly heritage mural.

“The mural is part of our school’s diversity, equity and inclusion work,” Harding Middle School Principal Joe Niemantsverdriet said. “Each month we will be recognizing people from a variety of cultures that have contributed to our society and reflect the diversity of cultures within the school community.

“We believe all our students should be proud of their heritage and appreciate the contributions of the wider community to our society. As we continue this year-long effort to recognize the contributions from across the global cultures, we hope our students will reflect on how the United States, Ohio and Lakewood are a melting pot that is stronger because of our diversity.”

Developed by Harding Middle School’s Building Leadership Team, which consists of administrators, teachers and a parent, the current mural -- featuring biographies of different figures written by sixth graders -- celebrates National Hispanic Heritage Month.

Helping create the visual aspect of the mural is Art Teacher Cesar Vargas, who said previously the school celebrated heritages but this year the effort has been increased using the first-floor hallway display.

“Being Hispanic, I thought of things that represent me as a Puerto Rican, as well as added different Spanish cultures to the mural,” said Vargas, who noted the project began with social studies teachers engaging students to write biographies.

“It’s been positive. Students picked the people they wanted to write about. It’s just shedding some more light on people these students wouldn’t have known about otherwise.”

The mural has impacted the Harding Middle School students.

“It’s important because it shows that there are many Hispanic, Latino and Latina people who contribute positively to society.” Sixth grader Janesa Morales said. “I’m proud to celebrate these people from my culture.”

Added sixth grader Marley Rawley, “I wanted to do it to learn more about Hispanics. I wrote about Sonya Sotomayor. It was special to me because I found out what she was capable of.”

The National Hispanic Heritage Month mural will be on display through Oct. 15. Up next, seventh graders will be celebrating National Italian-American Heritage Month for the remainder of October followed by eighth graders marking National American Indian Heritage Month in November.

“We’re not leaving anybody out,” Niemantsverdriet said. “We’re trying to celebrate everybody.”
