Kenwood Middle teacher dies of COVID-19, third teacher from CMCSS to die in month | ClarksvilleNow.com - Clarksville Now

CLARKSVILLE, TN (CLARKSVILLE NOW) – A Kenwood Middle School teacher died over the weekend from COVID-19, becoming the third CMCSS teacher to die just this month and the second at Kenwood Middle in one week.

James Ferebee, 54, the social and emotional learning coordinator at Kenwood Middle, died on Saturday.

“Mr. Jim Ferebee, our highly loved teacher and Social and Emotional Learning Coach, who has been with us for over 12 years, passed away over the weekend. Please direct your prayers and thoughts to his family,” Kenwood Middle Principal Jeremiah Davis said in a note sent out to KMS families Sunday evening.

Davis added that the school will provide additional counselors this week to those who might need emotional support.

According to his biography on the Kenwood Middle website, Ferebee was retired U.S. Army and coached Little League baseball.

His wife Jennifer also works at KMS as a STEM teacher, and confirmed to Clarksville Now that his cause of death was COVID-19.

“Jim was a good man he took care of everyone,” Jennifer said in an email. “He was the love of my life. He always looked for the good. He never met a challenge he couldn’t tackle.”

The pair had four children between them, with one attending Montgomery Central High School and another enrolled at the Tennessee College of Applied Technology. The two older children are out of college and married, Jennifer said.

Christie Hill, a teacher in the district who previously worked at Kenwood Middle, told Clarksville Now that Ferebee was an impactful educator.

“He was an incredible man, a remarkable teacher and a mentor to so many,” Hill said.

“Mr. Ferebee taught with a passion and was that one-of-a-kind teacher who could reach the students who were the hardest to reach. Many of us were talking about his sign he had at his door each morning. It said, ‘Walk with a purpose.’ He lived those words and wanted everyone else around him to walk with a purpose, as well,” Hill continued.

Third CMCSS death this month

Gregory Tramel, 51 and a 6th grade Social Studies teacher at KMS, died Sept. 19. Christie Litchfield, 45, who taught at Woodlawn Elementary School for over 20 years, died on Sept. 6. Clarksville Now has been unable to confirm Tramel’s or Litchfield’s cause of death.

While Ferebee is the third active CMCSS teacher to die in just September, another teacher, Angela Klosterman, died Sept. 5. She taught for several years in CMCSS schools, but was teaching in Cheatham County schools this school year, according to Anthony Johnson, chief communication officer for CMCSS.
