DALTON, Ga. — A north Georgia teacher has died of COVID-19 one month after her husband, who coached middle school football, also died of the virus.
Heidi Hammond, 44, died Friday. Hammond taught at Chatsworth Elementary School in Murray County. She had been employed with the school system for more than 20 years and taught first grade.

Her husband, Sean Hammond, 51, died of COVID-19 on Aug. 30. Hammond was the new football coach at Hammond Creek Middle School in Dalton.

The couple were parents to a 12-year-old son, Marshall.
Sean Hammond’s brother, John Hammond, told the Dalton Daily Citizen that the couple was not vaccinated, but they were healthy and extremely active before they got sick.
“Our hearts are breaking for this loss and for Heidi’s family and son Marshall,” officials at Chatsworth Elementary wrote. “Heidi will be greatly missed in the CES family. Please remember her family and Marshall in your prayers as they face the days ahead.”
