WWW Hubert Middle Students Earn Silver Medals at the 2021 FCCLA National Leadership Conference - Savannah-Chatham County Public School System

Not even a global pandemic can stop Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) members from making a difference in their families, careers, and communities. Although this past school year looked a bit different, Hubert Middle School FCCLA member's perseverance, tenacity, and resilience shined through as students nationwide participated in Student Taking Action with Recognition (STAR) Event projects. The top STAR Event competitors from each state, advanced to compete virtually at the 2021 Hybrid National Leadership Conference, held in Nashville, TN on June 27-July 2, 2021.

Hubert Middle FCCLA Advisor Marissa Johnson applauds her students “hard work and dedication in the face of adversity" and attributes her student's success to the employability skills members develop through character development, creative and critical thinking, interpersonal communication, practical knowledge, and career preparation. Mrs. Johnson is grateful for the support students received from their parents, JWHMS teachers, staff, Principal Brian Dotson, CTAE Director Angie Lewis and the Office of Career and College Readiness. “This achievement would not be possible if these students did not have a strong village to rely on".

STAR Events are Competitive Events in which members are recognized for their proficiency and achievement in chapter and individual projects, leadership skills, and career preparation. STAR Events allow students to compete individually or as a team. There are more than 30 STAR Events students can choose to compete in to demonstrate their knowledge, skills, and abilities to actively identify an issue concerning families, careers, or communities.  They research the topic, and develop and implement a project to advocate for positive change.

Both youth and adults work together in managing the events and serving as evaluators of the participants. STAR Events aim to support student development of knowledge and skills and enhance the classroom experience and Career Pathway initiatives by equipping students with employable skills and industry insights needed to thrive in the 21st century.
