Meeting Street Academy fifth graders earn $1.5M in middle, high school scholarships - Charleston Post Courier

The Meeting Street Academy’s Class of 2021 earned $1.5 million in scholarships for middle and high school programs next year.

The independent school, which was founded by philanthropists Ben and Kelly Navarro, aims to give a high-quality education to all students, regardless of socioeconomic status. More than 90 percent of the school’s student population is receiving some form of tuition assistance, Meeting Street Schools CEO Christopher Ruszkowski said.

The group of 20 fifth graders received scholarships to a number of private, independent and magnet schools throughout the region. Over the past year, the group of students achieved growth in both reading and math, outperforming 98 percent of fifth graders across the country, according to a news release.

Those students were accepted to programs at Ashley Hall, Buist Academy, Charleston Catholic School, Charleston Charter School for Math & Science, First Baptist School and Mason Preparatory School in downtown Charleston; Green Charter School of the Lowcountry and Charleston County School of the Arts in North Charleston; and The Cooper School and Porter-Gaud in West Ashley.

The academy’s holistic approach to education is what allows its students to succeed, Ruszkowski said. Because of the school’s early childhood model, the Class of 2021 has spent nearly a decade working with Meeting Street Academy teachers and staff.

“It takes our students and our families over the course of a decade to arrive at this point of them being accepted to some of the best middle schools and high schools in the region and earning scholarships to go there,” Ruszkowski said.

The success of the Class of 2021 comes during a time of expansion for Meeting Street. The 2021 group is the last class of fifth graders to graduate from the academy.

Starting in 2022, the academy will be offering sixth grade, adding another grade each year until it’s offering a full K-8 curriculum. Ruszkowski expects that the majority of the students at the academy will choose to continue on with Meeting Street through eighth grade.

Meeting Street Schools is also expanding its programs at the public-private schools at Brentwood and Burns in North Charleston to sixth through eighth grade.

With that expansion will come a new curriculum for the middle school students, including a capstone project that those students will complete in their seventh and eighth grade years, Ruszkowski said.

The project will be an opportunity for the students to be entrepreneurs, creating their own business, community project or arts program.

“They could start a band, try to invent a new project, fashion design or start a charity, but the idea is student ownership of a project over the course of a year or longer,” Ruszkowski said.

So far, the Meeting Street model has been a success for children attending the schools, with parents saying that the program has given their students an "academic edge."

The support offered at Meeting Street — holistic care, two-teacher classrooms, family partnership and extended learning — can all be replicated at typical public schools throughout South Carolina, Ruszkowski said.

$3B could transform SC schools. Will local school boards spend it wisely?
