Free COVID-19 vaccine clinic offered Sunday at Appleton's Wilson Middle School - WBAY

APPLETON, Wis. (WBAY) - Community members in Appleton who have not received a COVID-19 vaccine yet were invited to do so at Wilson Middle School on Sunday July 11 for free.

Event organizers said the goal was to offer access to vaccines to more ethnically diverse students and families in the Fox Valley. The Pfizer vaccine was offered at the event, which ran from 1:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. at the school located at 225 N. Badger Avenue in Appleton. Anyone who was at least 12-years-old was welcome to participate. Those who were under 18-years-old needed to be accompanied by a legal guardian.

About 50.7% of Wisconsin residents have received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine according to the Wisconsin Department of Health Services. However, Dr. Pam Her says many people in the Hispanic, African American, and Hmong communities are still hesitant.

“There’s a lot of fear around vaccination and what it really is,” Her, a member of Northeast Wisconsin Hmong Professionals, said. “We’ve been doing a lot of educating in our community. But for us it’s creating that safe space so they can come and they can ask questions to make the decision about getting the vaccination or not. In most cases they’ll get vaccinated they just need some things answered. To be able to hear it from someone who looks like them, who speaks their language, who can understand where they’re coming from.”

No identification or health insurance was required. Plus, food vouchers to local ethnic restaurants and grocery stores were given out as incentives to attend.

“Sometimes people just think, oh it’s a shot in the arm why don’t you just go to Walgreens? This is all about getting the communities together - diverse communities,” the chief development officer of Partnership Community Health Center, Trish Sarvela, said. “For example, people in healthcare and organizations who are really concerned about the future of our kids and our families. Getting people together to say, I’m ready to be healthy and I’m ready to support my community to keep this virus out and move on.”

Hmong and Spanish interpreters were on-site to try and combat one typical vaccine obstacle.

“There are barriers and that’s one of the main ones is that we have people who are not bilingual and they need to have translations as far as filling out the information needed on the health forms,” the president of Casa Hispana, Ernesto Gonzalez, emphasized.

Although you could have registered ahead of time, walk-ins were encouraged to stop by. A second dose will be required, and organizers say those are planned for Sunday, August 1 at Wilson Middle School.
