The well-known coastal eight-piece funk and jazz band Blackwater Brass is sharing their talent with their next generation of musicians.
Giving back the same way he was taught, trombone player, vocalist, and hype man Elmer Belmonte, also known as Mondo, accepted a position as D’Iberville Middle School’s band director.
He hopes to bring the same New Orleans second line funk to the D’Iberville Middle School Band, encouraging students to have fun with music and share his experiences as a musician playing across the Coast.
Belmonte’s work starts soon as high school summer band camps start next week and recruitment for his own middle school band program is underway. “As a band student and member of other types of extracurricular activities, I gained leadership in a lot of those positions and some of my peers would come to me and ask to explain certain things to them and I found a certain satisfaction in explaining those things. I realized this is something that I could do and contribute to my community and to help raise that next generation of Gulf Coast musicians.”
Belmonte wants parents to be aware of recruitment letters for their children to join the middle school band. Letters will be sent via mail, email, and handouts will be given to students the first day back to school.
