CLEVELAND HEIGHTS, Ohio -- MetroHealth hospitals, Councilwoman Davida Russell and Monticello Middle School have teamed up for an initial round of COVID-19 vaccines in the junior high gymnasium on Wednesday (June 9).
“We’re partnering as both a walk-up and appointment vaccination site close to home” for residents in the northeastern end of Cleveland Heights,” Russell noted, with the clinic running from 2-6 p.m. in the newly-renovated gym.
The free Pfizer vaccines require two doses, and those receiving their first shot on Wednesday will be scheduled for their second round coming up at Monticello as well.
Free parking is available at the school, with a Greater Cleveland RTA No. 7 bus stop directly in front of the building -- at least for now, with some route changes scheduled for June 13.
The Pfizer vaccine is approved for anyone 12 years or older, although minors must be accompanied by a parent or guardian, a joint press release noted.
“Registration is requested but not required -- walk-ups without an appointment will also be able to get vaccinated,” officials added, with sign-ups available at https://www.metrohealth.org/covid-19/covid-vaccine, or by calling (216) 778-6100.
Russell was part of a coalition of area African-American councilwomen who earlier contacted Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine about more vaccine availability outside the City of Cleveland.
This led to her receiving several hundred extra access numbers and appointment vouchers for residents who may have otherwise had difficulty booking an appointment.
The biggest disruption in those exchanges came in early April when Russell obtained access code numbers for the single-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine in early April -- right around the time the “one-and-done” shot was put on pause for further study.
After further review, the J&J vaccine was then reintroduced to the public by the end of the month.
Meanwhile, back at the Pfizer shots, Russell and MetroHealth officials expressed hope that everyone who still needs a vaccine will either sign up or show up at Monticello on Wednesday, adding “it is safe, effective and our best chance to get back to normal this summer.”
