Strong Spring Cold Front to Bring Snow From the Rockies to the Midwest | The Weather Channel - Articles from The Weather Channel | weather.com - The Weather Channel

worldinmiddleeast.blogspot.com
  • Chillier air has plunged into the Plains.
  • Snow is expected from the Rockies to the Midwest.
  • Significant snow is possible in Kansas City, Chicago and Detroit.

A late season snow is increasingly likely in parts of the Great Lakes and Central Plains after heavier snow in the Rockies to start the week.

A cold front is poised to sweep through the country's midsection in the first half of the week ahead. Behind it, temperatures will be as much as 30 degrees below average for mid- to late April.

With this chilly air in place and spring-like moisture beginning to seep northward from the Gulf of Mexico, wet snow is expected in parts of the Rockies, Plains and Upper Midwest beginning Sunday.

Daily Forecast

Sunday - Monday

The cold front will first reach Montana and the Dakotas on Sunday, diving southward through the day and into Sunday night across parts of the Plains, northern Rockies and upper Midwest. Moderate snow is possible across Montana and Wyoming by Sunday night with rain or a rain/snow mix falling along the front in the Midwest.

By Monday, snow will intensify somewhat as it reaches the Central Rockies and Central Plains. Precipitation may start as rain as the front droops southward, but most spots in these regions will see precipitation turn to snow by late day.

Some wet snow accumulations are possible, including in Denver and in Cheyenne, Wyoming.

This won't be nearly the magnitude of mid-March's Winter Storm Xylia, which dumped feet of snow in the Front Range and High Plains of Wyoming and Colorado.

Breezy conditions are expected as the front passes through, which could lower visibilities where it is snowing.

Monday night, some snow may begin to mix in with rain as far east as Chicago and as far south as northern Oklahoma and the northern Texas panhandle.

Tuesday

A low pressure system will intensify as it moves northward along a cold front into the Great Lakes Tuesday.

Cold air will mix with moisture along that front, and snow flurries will fly on the northside. Some snow or a rain/snow mix is likely from northern Oklahoma or eastern Kansas to northern Illinois and southern Michigan. A cool rain will fall from southern Missouri to parts of Ohio with temperatures cooling through the day.

Tuesday night, snow will stretch from central and northern Illinois to lower Michigan, and perhaps as far east as northern New York and northern New England. Rain will fall in the Tennessee and Ohio valleys and into the rest of the interior Northeast.

Some lake-effect snow showers are possible on Wednesday into early Thursday in parts of western New York, western Pennsylvania and northern Ohio with snow showers also possible across northern New England as the low pressure system moves away from the United States.

Snowfall Forecast

The heaviest snow is expected in the Rockies, where most will see 3-6 inches of new snow. Higher elevations may see more than a foot of snow.

Further east, a stretch from Kansas and Nebraska to Illinois, northern Ohio and southern Lower Michigan will pick up at least an inch of snow.

For some in the Midwest, this will be a significant late season snow. The average last snow (0.1") in Chicago is March 31 and in Detroit that snow falls on April 8. In Kansas City, the last snow falls in late March.
