A Weld County middle school has received sponsorship from an Amazon program to upgrade computer science options for students in sixth through eighth grades.
The 778-student Milliken Middle School in the Weld RE-5J School District earned the sponsorship after qualifying for the Amazon Future Engineer program, which is a four-part, childhood-to-career program aimed at “inspiring and educating hundreds of thousands of students from underrepresented and underserved communities each year to try computer science and coding,” according to the program website.
“A partnership like this allows our students opportunities and access to computer science they might not have had otherwise,” Milliken Middle School Principal Aspen Sanders wrote in an email. “Middle school is really about exposure and giving kids the opportunity to explore what interests them. With Amazon and Project STEM, they not only get exposure at an early age, but our teachers get the professional development and support. If kids are still interested in computer science in high school, there’s even scholarships and internships available to them. Really, this partnership is a small window for our students into a much bigger world and resources we currently don’t have access to.”
The future engineer program is a part of Amazon’s $50 million investment in computer science over the next five years, also according to the website.
The three-year sponsorship comes at no cost to the school or the school district. At the end of the three years, the school may continue to use the curriculum and will no longer need support and training.
The program allows the accepted middle schools access to exploratory computer science classes through Project STEM, a collaborating program with the future engineer initiative. Selected middle schools receive courses, implementation and ongoing support.
At Milliken, inclusion in the program will allow the school to add three computer science courses: My Computer Science Fundamentals; Artificial Intelligence in Our World; and Computer Science and Creative Media. Teachers will receive training and support to enable them to teach the courses.
“Middle school is a pivotal entry point for STEM interest and this sponsorship is going to create terrific opportunities for our students to explore computer science in creative and exciting ways,” Sanders said in a news release from the Weld RE-5J School District.
