COLUMBIANA — The middle school is introducing new content for all students next school year.
Jason Martin, Columbiana Middle School principal, is introducing a math discovery course and innovations course for fifth-grade students. Math discovery will engage students with real-world projects and challenge students to solve problems using math skills. The course will allow students to combine critical thinking skills with mathematical knowledge, allowing them to apply what they know based on their particular interests.
Another course, by the name of Innovations, is also being offered to fifth-grade students. The course covers basic engineering processes and provides opportunities to test and evaluate solutions to realistic challenges. Students will have the opportunity to explore marketing by presenting their solutions at the end of the class.
Fifth- and sixth-grade students will have the option to participate in either band or choir for a full year or pair an elective with choir in order to explore educational opportunities.
“I think middle school is all about giving them exposure, giving them some access to information,” Martin explained.
Sixth graders will get an exploratory hour providing them multiple options. Students can choose between book club, yearbook design, advertising and marketing and the option to design a house to scale, to name a few. Another course being offered to sixth-grade students is a career and life skills course. Students will learn essential skills like writing checks, reading measurements, job applications and buying a car or house.
Two other new courses will be offered to seventh graders. An elective designed to help students become more confident and fluent readers by exposing them to classic and modern literature will be offered along with another elective that covers multiple types of journalism and media such as video, print, podcasts, social media, etc. Students will participate in a monthly publication.
Eighth-grade students are receiving a variety of new electives, including human body systems, wellness for success and a required introduction to financial investments. Introduction to financial investments will give students a comprehensive introduction to finance and investing. The emphasis will be placed on stock market terminology and students will participate by following stock trends and investing in a simulated market.
Martin believes that high school students and administrators are challenged consistently with preparing students for the future by evaluating what the economy and job market will look like when students graduate. While Martin said he doesn’t believe the new electives are going to push students to make permanent decisions during middle school, he does believe that giving students an introduction to the material will be beneficial.
“Students will have a hands-on approach to a lot of content that they need to become acclimated to anyway,” said Martin.
Martin said he believes students exceeded expectations the past year. Covid protocols challenged instructors, administrative staff and leadership. Students have given up a lot of fun events and Martin is anticipating rewarding students for their resilience during such a challenging time.
“We want to give our students the reward of some choice for a lot of reasons but specifically based on how amazing our students have been with all of this Covid protocol, our kids have really risen to the occasion, demonstrated how mature they are and I believe they are mature enough to have some options within the school day,” said Martin.
