A middle school teacher was arrested Wednesday and is accused of assaulting a student, according to the Cache County Sheriff's Office.
Authorities were notified by a local hospital where the victim, a student at Spring Creek Middle School in Providence, was treated for injuries from the assault.
At least one student was injured, but sheriff's officials and the district said the teacher, 51-year-old Scott D. Meeker, used physical force with multiple students during the incident.
"It was determined that the juvenile receiving treatment was one of several victims in the alleged incident from the middle school," said Lt. Doyle Peck with the sheriff's office.
Sheriff's investigators and school resource officers interviewed multiple students on Thursday and determined Meeker should be arrested.
He was booked into jail and held on charges of second-degree felony child abuse, third-degree felony aggravated assault, and three misdemeanor counts of assault.
Sheriff's officials did not specify how many students they believe were assaulted.
Peck said the investigation is ongoing. Meeker has been placed on administrative leave from his teaching job.
Meeker has been employed with the Cache County School District for 22 years, 2News was told.
"The Cache County School District absolutely does not tolerate the use of physical force of any kind by adults with children," CCSD stated. "Pending criminal charges and an internal investigation, appropriate actions will be taken in consequence of this incident.
Every student should be able to attend school without concern for their safety and well being, and with the knowledge that adults should be their strongest advocates," district officials continued. "We appreciated the dedicated teachers and support staff in our district who work to that end."
