Puleo Shines in Middle-Distance Events in 2021 Track Debut

Men's Cross Country /

LYNCHBURG, Va. – With record-setting cross country senior Casey Williams sitting out Longwood's first track meet of the spring, sophomore Grace Puleo took hold of the spotlight.

With a pair of top-five finishes in the 1,500-meter and 800m, Longwood's ace-in-waiting asserted herself at the front of Longwood's pack to highlight Longwood's 2021 track debut Saturday at the Dr. Jack Toms Invitational hosted by Lynchburg.

Puleo, who has consistently been among Longwood's top two finishers in every race of her collegiate career, showcased her versatility in two middle-distance events Saturday, placing third in the 1,500m and fifth in the 800m. In her opening race of the day, the Chesterfield, Va., native broke the five-minute barrier in the 1,500 to place third out of 37 participants and trailed only Concord's Emily Wallace (4:48.94) and Hannah Altzer (4:54.51).

Puleo was one of three Lancers to finish in the top 10 of the 1,500m, leading freshman Caroline Fairbanks (5:11.34), who placed sixth, and freshman Bailey Deaver (5:17.74), who placed 10th.

But Puleo didn't stop there, lacing up her track spikes once again to burn her way to a fifth-place finish out of 35 runners in the 800. She clocked a 2:27.59 in the event, was one of only eight to break 2:30 and missed another top-three finish by just over seven seconds.

Several Lancer men also made their 2021 track debuts, including sophomore Sam Sager who was Longwood's top finisher in both the 1,500m and 800m. In a field of 68 runners in the 1,500, Sager finished 16th with a 4:13.46 and edged out fellow sophomore Shahmique Cromwell, who placed 20th with a 4:15.97.

Sager's follow-up came in the 800m where he just missed breaking the two-minute plateau with a 2:00.30, which was good enough for 10th out of 37 runners.

The Dr. Jack Toms Invitational is the first of two scheduled track meets for Longwood cross country this spring. The next will be at the Wildcat Track Festival, hosted by Randolph College in Lynchburg, Va.
