Spokane middle, high schoolers are back in the classroom Monday - KXLY Spokane

SPOKANE, Wash. — March 13 was the last day Spokane middle and high school students sat in a classroom. Nearly a year later, the day has finally come where they can head back to school.

Students will be in-person twice a week starting Monday, plus alternate Fridays.

Though they’re divided up into two groups — students say they couldn’t be happier. For some students, it’s the first time they’re stepping into a new school.

First day of school jitters are starting to set in for students like Lilia and Maylin Nicholson.

“I was kind of nervous, but now I feel like I’m less nervous,” said Maylin. “Now, I’m really excited.”

Maylin is heading to Sacajawea Middle School for the first time. Her sister Lilia is starting her freshman year at LC. They haven’t walked the school halls since last March.

“I said goodbye to all my teachers just in case I wasn’t going to see them again,” Lilia said.

Learning at home has been a challenge—between distractions and loneliness, this day couldn’t get here any quicker, although they wish it was more than twice a week.

“I want to go back to school full-time, so it’s kind of like missing out on my freshman year of high school,” said Lilia.

But these sisters see it as a step in the right direction.

“I’m going to consider this Tuesday my first day of school,” said fellow LC freshman Noelle Fries. “I didn’t think that we were going to go back to school at all this year, so it was really surprising to me that we were eventually going to go back and I’m really glad that we are.”

Fries says she’s excited to see her friends and teachers, plus continue with the drill team.

And while we know things won’t be the same, this hard time puts things into perspective and makes you realize that we can handle what is put in front of us.

“One of the quotes that she [teacher] always reminded us of is ‘This too shall pass’ and telling us even the good things will pass, even COVID should pass one day,” said Maylin.

Front arrives tomorrow; cooler weather to follow - KATC Lafayette News

worldinmiddleeast.blogspot.com

It was a mild and breezy Sunday across Acadiana.

Wind gusts at times were in excess of 30 mph!

Temperatures climbed into the upper 70s this afternoon under mostly cloudy skies.

We did have a few spotty showers develop this afternoon, mainly for northern parishes of Acadiana.

Rain chances will sit at round 20% through the overnight period as low temperatures only fall into the mid-upper 60s

Areas of coastal fog will be possible once again.

A front will be approaching the area from the north by tomorrow mid-morning.

However, most spots along and south of the interstate will probably still reach the lower to mid 70s prior to the passage of the front.

Temperatures will gradually cool into the 60s for all of the area by the afternoon.

It's important to note that the majority of the precipitation will be behind the front, so that will take out any severe weather potential across the area.

Scattered showers will be lurking around on Monday, but the day will not be a washout.

Mostly cloudy skies can be expected as winds shift around from out of the northeast by the afternoon.

That front will drop into the Gulf waters by Monday evening.

2021-02-28_17-15-44.gif
katc weather

Overrunning moisture can be expected on Tuesday as an upper-level disturbance moves in.

A surface low will develop along the front in the Gulf keeping our rain chances elevated.

The bulk of the rain we see should fall through the course of Tuesday morning and extending close to the lunchtime hour.

By the afternoon on Tuesday, the rain will be moving out the area.

1/2"-1" of rain can be expected.

GRAF 4km Accumulation Acadiana.png
katc weather

Unlike yesterday, where it looked like the low may track a little farther north and thus push our temperatures into the lower 60s on Tuesday, it appears that it will now track farther to our south which keeps us in the cooler sector of air.

If this comes to fruition, temperatures will likely remain in the 50s throughout Tuesday.

Regardless, skies gradually being to clear heading into Tuesday night as temperatures drop into the lower 40s by Wednesday morning.

High pressure will be in control for Wednesday and Thursday with pretty nice conditions on tap.

Temperatures will be in the 60s under mainly sunny skies.

Another system will approach on Friday, but models differ on how much precipitation it will bring with it.

I have kept a 40% chance of rain in the forecast for now to split the difference.

However, that system will be clearing things out nicely as we head into the following weekend!

Have a great week, y'all and let's make it a good one!

~Bradley

After a cloudy weekend, a cold front is forecast to move into San Antonio Sunday evening that will bring a drop in temperature and a chance of showers and thunderstorms that will last through Monday afternoon.

The cold front will hit San Antonio this evening with wind gusts near 25 mph and possible thunderstorm activity. These storms are at a marginal risk for severe weather bringing hail up to one inch and damaging winds are low at this time. However, the rain will continue overnight Sunday into Monday.

Give yourself extra time for your Monday morning commute as shower and thunderstorms will continue through the afternoon. Winds behind the front will still be breezy at 25 mph and may continue into the evening.

Morning temps will be chilly in the low 40s and afternoon highs will be in the mid 50s.

Middle Tennessee weather: Severe storms, flash floods and possible tornadoes on Sunday - Tennessean

Evening cold front brings overnight rain, isolated thunderstorm chance - KBTX

worldinmiddleeast.blogspot.com

BRYAN, Texas (KBTX) - The next cold front to reach the Brazos Valley opens up the chance for scattered rain by Sunday evening. Parts of the Brazos Valley Monday may be jolted awake before the alarm rings as a fast-moving disturbance jets out of Mexico to the northeast across Texas.

The Storm Prediction Center has placed a majority of the Brazos Valley under a MARGINAL - 1 out of 5 - Risk for isolated strong-to-severe thunderstorms. To be clear, this is a broad area of Texas under this risk -- from South Texas, up the entire I-35 corridor through Central and North Texas, to the Arklatex, along with the Brazos Valley. The higher risk for severe weather falls just northeast of the area, across Northeast Texas and Arkansas.

CONCERNS:

  • Hail penny size or larger.
  • Heavy rain that could produce a quick 1/2″ to 1″ as stronger storms pass by. Minor, brief low-lying / street flooding would be short-lived issues.
Isolated strong-to-briefly severe storms are possible, mainly through the pre-sunrise hours of...
Isolated strong-to-briefly severe storms are possible, mainly through the pre-sunrise hours of Monday.(KBTX)

Overall severe threat is low, mainly because the disturbance responsible for this storm chance should arrive behind Sunday evening’s cold front. Instability will be lower which should help mitigate the overall concerns as this storm chance materializes.

TIMING

Sunday’s cold front is scheduled to arrive in the North and Central Brazos Valley between 7pm and 9pm. While that could produce a few rumbles of thunder of its own, this should mostly remain of the scattered rain variety.

Isolated pockets of heavier rain will be possible, arriving from the west, between midnight and 2am. The main round of activity, should storms be worth monitoring, arrives between 3am and 6am Monday.

RAINFALL

By sunrise Monday, 0.25″ to 0.75″ of rain will be possible, mainly across the North and Central Brazos Valley. Another 0.5″ or more of rain will be possible through the day Monday, as this cold front lingers and finally pushes south of the area.

Forecast rainfall across the Brazos Valley between Sunday night and Monday afternoon
Forecast rainfall across the Brazos Valley between Sunday night and Monday afternoon(KBTX)

All said and done, 0.75″ to 1.0″ of rain is not far-fetched for the Brazos Valley, with localized 1.5″ or higher totals possible across the Northeast and Eastern Brazos Valley if the early morning round of rain and storms manages to produce higher totals.

Northwestern State shutouts Middle Tennessee, falls to Missouri during South Alabama Invitational - KALB News

MOBILE, Ala. (NSU Sports Information) — One day after owning the spotlight, and rightfully so, Northwestern State junior Jensen Howell returned in similar form Saturday during the second day of the South Alabama Invitational. She registered another home run against Middle Tennessee and that proved to be the difference.

The Lady Demons downed the Blue Raiders 2-0 in their first game of the day. NSU dropped an 8-0 decision to Missouri in its second and final contest of the day.

“I thought E.C. (Delafield) settled in, and did really nice job and got us deep into the game and held (Middle Tennessee) down,” head coach Donald Pickett said. “We had a lot of opportunities, I felt like, and then we got on the board with a big swing from Jensen.”

The results pushed the Lady Demons’ record to 4-1 on the season. Northwestern State wraps up play at the South Alabama Invitational on Sunday. The Lady Demons battle SIU-Edwardsville again at 11:15 a.m. and play host South Alabama at 1:30 p.m.

NSU 2, Middle Tennessee 0

Howell’s home run — her second of the season and second in as many days — occurred in the third inning. She plated freshman Kat Marshall who reached base on a single.

That was all Delafield, who was making her first start of the season, needed. She went five innings, allowing four hits with three strikeouts. Sophomore Bronte Rhoden came on in relief, tossing the final two innings, only surrendering one hit and logging one strikeout.

One constant theme through four of the first five contests this season has been NSU’s pitching. Two shutouts and one game allowing just one run has Pickett pleased with what his staff has done thus far.

“I think they’re doing a really good job of attacking hitters,” Pickett said. “For the most part, we’ve not put a lot of people on. We’ve made other teams earn it. (Our pitchers) do a really good job changing speeds and working ahead of hitters.”

NSU managed to record nine hits against Middle Tennessee. Senior outfielder Elise Vincent led the way with a season-high three hits from her leadoff spot, while Marshall and senior infielder Emma Hawthorne enjoyed two-hit games.

Missouri 8, NSU 0 (5 Innings)

Northwestern State managed six hits against Missouri, and threatened throughout the early stages of the game Saturday. The Lady Demons put a pair of runners on in each of the first four innings, but couldn’t muster up the big RBI hit.

Pickett believes those scoring opportunities will continually arise, and he’s confident his team will register many big hits going forward.

“We just got to get some games under our belt,” Pickett said. “It’s definitely going to come with as talented of hitters as we have. With it being early in the year, we are still getting back into the groove, and not having that consistent approach up and down the lineup. I just think it’s going to take a little time get everybody gelling again.”

Conversely, Missouri did log a few big hits and put up a couple crooked numbers. The Tigers loaded the bases in the first en route to a four-run inning. Howell received the not to start, and she made it through 2/3 of an inning before freshman Kenzi Seeley came on in relief.

Missouri enjoyed a two-run third, and that sandwiched around a pair of one-run innings ended the contest in five innings. NSU senior Samantha Guile made her first appearance of the season, and pitched the final two innings.

ODU men's hoops wins 3rd straight, beats Middle Tennessee 73-60 - wtkr.com

NORFOLK, Va. (ODUSports.com) – In the 2020-21 home finale, the Old Dominion men's basketball team (14-6, 10-4 C-USA) was too much for Middle Tennessee (5-15, 3-11 C-USA) in a 73-60 victory on Saturday night at Chartway Arena. Jaylin Hunter poured in a career high 17 points, a career high six assists to compliment four rebounds, while Mekhi Long also turned in a career high 16 points. ODU has now won five of its last six games, as well as 12 of its last 16.

Old Dominion ends the 2020-21 season with an 9-1 record at home. Since 2014-15, the Monarchs are 86-17 when playing at Chartway Arena. Old Dominion has won its last four contests against the Blue Raiders.

After trailing by 14 at halftime, Middle Tennessee cut its deficit down to 10, 41-31, at the 18:02 mark of the second half. The Monarchs responded right back scoring 16 of the game's next 20 points, ballooning its lead to 22, 57-35, capped off by an A.J. Oliver II trey with 11:02 to play. The Blue Raiders utilized a 7-0 run to pull with 15, 57-42, with 9:08 remaining in regulation.

The closest Middle Tennessee would get the rest of the way was the final score.

"I thought tonight was the complete game that we didn't play last night," said ODU head coach Jeff Jones. "We had terrific energy, our defense was outstanding, and we had a lot of different guys contribute at different times. So to finish the game in a positive manner, I thought was a good sign and left us feeling good about ourselves after this series."

Austin Trice went for 11 points and a game high eight rebounds. Also in double-figures for ODU was Malik Curry, who scored 10 points in 13 minutes.

For the contest, Old Dominion held advantages for points in the paint (44-18) and bench points (32-21). ODU's defense held the Blue Raiders to 33.3% (20-60) shooting from the floor and 30.0% (9-30) from three-point range. For the game, the Monarchs connected on 51.6% (32-62) from floor. Old Dominion only turned the ball over eight times on Saturday night and led for a total of 34:46 of the total 40 minutes.

Over a 5:46 span, ODU went on a 13-2 run to take an early 17-11 advantage in the first half. Old Dominion ended the opening frame outscoring the Blue Raiders 32-13, claiming a 36-22 lead heading into the locker rooms at halftime.

The Monarchs defense held Middle Tennessee to 9.1% (1-11) shooting from deep and 32.1% (9-28) in the opening 20 minutes. Malik Curry scored a half-high 10 points. For the half, ODU held advantages for bench points (17-7), points in the paint (22-14) and fast break points (7-0).

Old Dominion will return to action for its final two games of the regular season, when the Monarchs travel to Bowling Green, Kentucky for a pair of games against Western Kentucky on Friday, March 5 at 8 p.m. EST and Saturday, March 6 at 5 p.m. EST.

The Hilltoppers currently sit in first place in the Conference USA East division, while ODU sits alone in second place. Western Kentucky (15-5, 8-2 C-USA) received votes in the most recent AP Top 25 poll.

The top two teams from each division receive byes in the 2021 Conference USA Tournament held in Frisco on March 9-14.

To view the C-USA standings, please CLICK HERE [conferenceusa.com].

"To have an opportunity to play the number one team in our league next weekend should be the definition of fun," Jones concluded. "If you're a competitor, these are the opportunities you look forward to and dream about."

Middle Tennessee splits doubleheader, with Austin Peay and Xavier - GoBlueRaiders.com

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – The Blue Raider women's tennis team hosted a doubleheader on Saturday at the Adam's Tennis Complex. It was a bittersweet day for Middle Tennessee, as they would win their early match against Austin Peay 4-2 but drop the afternoon contest 2-5 against a hot-handed Xavier squad.

Things got off to a rocky start early on in the first match for the Blue Raiders, seeing the doubles pair of Lee Barnard and Lidia Burrows squander an early 4-0 lead. However, it would take much more than a bad set to put away the Lady Raiders.

Sophomore Love-Star Alexis would put on a clinic in her singles match, winning in straight sets 6-0, 6-0. Middle Tennessee would go onto dominate in the rest of their singles matches, winning in straight sets on three out of five of the remaining courts.

After a short break during the afternoon, the Blue Raiders would take the court once more to face the Musketeers of Xavier. It was another tough start for the Lady Raiders, as they would fall behind 1-0 early after failing to secure the doubles point. It would only get more difficult to come back as the match wore on.

There were only two players for Middle Tennessee to come out on top of the match's singles portion. Love-Star continued her impressive run, putting away her opponent in straight sets 6-2, 6-2. Sophomore Noelle Mauro would earn the other Blue Raider victory after a thrilling third set tie-break to give her the victory 6-2, 1-6, 7-6 (7-4).

The Lady Raiders will be back at Adam's Tennis Complex next weekend, as they are set to open up Conference USA play. Louisiana Tech will be in town next Saturday for a match-up at 3:00, followed by Southern Miss, who will take on Middle Tennessee on Sunday at 11:00.

Bruce Cassidy calls out 'middle group' after loss to Rangers - 98.5 The Sports Hub

Aug 26, 2020; Toronto, Ontario, CAN; Boston Bruins head coach Bruce Cassidy reacts on the bench during the third period against the Tampa Bay Lightning in game three of the second round of the 2020 Stanley Cup Playoffs at Scotiabank Arena. Mandatory Credit: Dan Hamilton-USA TODAY Sports

Bruins coach Bruce Cassidy knows what he’s going to get from his first line.

And sure enough, it was the B’s one-two of Patrice Bergeron and Brad Marchand who accounted for the two tallies the B’s put on the board in a 6-2 humbling at the hands of the Rangers on Friday night. But it’s everybody below that team-carrying line that left a lot to be desired, as admitted by the B’s bench boss.

“I expect us to be better, absolutely,” a blunt Cassidy offered after his team’s second straight blowout defeat. “And that’s where I guess I would challenge the group that’s in the in the middle; [Anders] Bjork to [Jake] DeBrusk, to Johnny Moore and [Connor] Clifton who have been out of the lineup, guys have been in the league a little bit. The guys in the middle that have an opportunity that maybe some days go home and say, ‘Jeez, I wish I got more minutes or I had a better chance.’

“Put a little onus on themselves to impact the game, whether it’s offensively, physically or whatever. So I think I think that’s where that group, when they talk to me about, ‘What do I need to do to stay in the lineup or get more minutes?’ You know, [Friday]’s a good example of that where they can push through a little bit, some younger legs, and impact the game a little bit better and I didn’t think we got that either. So that’s where I look internally at our team and and and expect better.”

This isn’t the first time that the Bruins have needed more from this group either.

Beginning with the team’s third-best winger behind Marchand and David Pastrnak, Jake DeBrusk’s 2021 season has been miserable at best.

The 24-year-old has just one goal on the season, and it was a power-play gimme of a turnover that ended up right on DeBrusk’s blade. DeBrusk has a slow starter before, sure, but this is a new low. One of 309 NHL forwards to play at least 150 minutes of five-on-five play this season, DeBrusk is one of 30 yet to record a five-on-five goal. He’s hardly alone there, obviously, but the problem comes with the fact that DeBrusk has an offensive-zone faceoff percentage of over 73 percent, which trails only the Canucks’ Elias Pettersson (76.16 percent) for the highest percentage among this group. DeBrusk is getting put in more favorable spots than players like Alex Ovechkin, Steven Stamkos, Patrik Laine, and Nathan MacKinnon.

And he’s done almost nothing with it.

It’s hard to imagine what else the Bruins could possibly try to get DeBrusk’s game going. At a certain point, as Cassidy said, the ‘onus’ goes on the player, and it feels safe to say that DeBrusk is long past due on that front.

Bjork, meanwhile, has basically played without a stick this season. While he’s been utilized as more of a forechecking presence, Bjork’s Friday featured his third straight game without a shot on goal to his name, which is now something that’s happened in 10 of his 18 contests to date. In fact, among that group of 309 forwards with at least 150 minutes of five-on-five play in 2021, Bjork ranks 308th in shots per 60 (2.29) and 303rd in individual expected goals per 60 (0.25). There is one per-60 rate where Bjork ranks in the top 21, however, and that’s in minor penalties taken per 60 minutes.

The B’s either moved on from players or opted not to make moves for certain players because they believed that both Bjork and DeBrusk, who with their new deals account for more than $5.2 million on Boston’s books, would emerge as key contributors for them. That has yet to happen in 2021.

And on the backend, there’s undeniable frustration with the fact that the Bruins clearly can’t rely on veteran John Moore (in year three of a five-year deal that only gets more confusing with each passing season) more than they can NHL newbies like Urho Vaakanainen and Jakub Zboril. And that Clifton, who lost his gig last year before regaining it with a strong playoff showing in the Toronto bubble, hasn’t played with the swagger his game has to come with, every night.

“I don’t think it’s too big,” Cassidy said when asked about the opportunity in front of this fill-in defense corps. “They’re NHL players or they’ve been in the American Hockey League. I mean, this is the opportunity they want, right? Vaak’s been down there, Zbori’s been down there, Cliffy’s been on the sidelines. Johnny Moore has been itching to get in. So here it is: Grab it. Play within yourself.

“The messaging has to be better from [the coaching staff] obviously, because there’s been some breakdowns I think have been avoidable.”

And this is where Cassidy finds himself between a rock and a hard place.

He understands the limitations in front of someone like Vaakanainen. Still getting his NHL feet wet, things like what happened on Anders Lee’s goal on Long Island and Chris Kreider’s goal at Madison Square Garden are going to happen. Asking him to be stronger than men in what was just 10th NHL game is unfair. It’s why he’s stressed the idea of simply “coaching him up” as best he can at this moment in time. But you can’t coach muscle mass or veteran know-how onto a frame.

Clifton and Moore, however, should be capable of giving you more.

Since jumping into the lineup five games ago, Moore has been on the ice for seven of the 23 goals surrendered by the Bruins, and five of the 13 allowed during this two-game trip to New York. Now, you can almost live with his decision to give Mat Barzal a little too much time and space because it’s Mat Barzal and he’s an ultra-talented scorer in this league. That’ll happen to Charlie McAvoy at some point, too. But getting clowned by the Devils’ Pavel Zacha on a four-on-four last week and then last night’s statuesque performance on multiple Ranger goals? That just can’t happen at the rate it has.

With 13 goals allowed over the last two games, however, nobody is immune from criticism.

And Cassidy includes himself in that group.

“They got to play better, first of all, and recognize what they can get away with the puck and not,” Cassidy said of his younger defense. “Just too many turnovers, too much reckless play. And we got to do a better job coaching them up, no doubt. So that’s on us.

“By the same token, once they get on the ice, they have to recognize how they can help us win games.”

They’ll get that chance at the same venue and against the same team on Sunday.

DJ LeMahieu thrilled to play in front of crowd, knows 'how much it means to a lot of fans to watch the Yankees' - ESPN

worldinmiddleeast.blogspot.com

TAMPA, Fla. -- DJ LeMahieu and the New York Yankees are happy there will be a little bit of baseball normalcy when spring training games begin on Sunday.

As in, fans in the stands when the Yankees host the Toronto Blue Jays at Steinbrenner Field.

Due to restrictions brought about by the coronavirus pandemic, it will be the first time fans will see the Yankees play in person since a spring training game last March 12.

"To me it's just Major League Baseball with fans," LeMahieu said on Saturday. "Last year I'm glad we played. Glad we were able to get in as many games as we could and I thought the playoffs was cool but just missed that adrenaline and excitement."

The limited crowd due to safety protocols for Sunday's game is expected to be around 2,800 in the ballpark that has a capacity of over 10,000.

"You can definitely tell how excited people are to go to baseball games, especially to watch the Yankees and that's what I'm excited about," LeMahieu said. "I enjoy the game but I know how much it means to a lot of fans to watch the Yankees and baseball."

Social distancing and mask-wearing rules are in place and there will be no close interactions, such as signing autographs, between players and fans.

"I definitely miss that," said LeMahieu, who led the majors in batting last year. "It's not always my favorite thing to do but I know how much it means. It's something I look forward to. Hopefully that kind of interaction returns."

The Blue Jays will also be playing before fans for the first time in almost a year.

"In just watching other events, whether it was college football, NFL games, different games where fans were there in limited capacities, it does change the look and the feel even watching it on TV I felt like," Yankees manager Aaron Boone said. "I'm sure it will be nice for the guys to have that environment and atmosphere that only the fans can create."

Boone said the first time the lack of fans last year really hit him hard was the initial series with the Boston Red Sox.

"Where there's just that normal extra buzz, angst and intensity in a regular-season setting," Boone said.

Warren Buffett: 'It’s easy to overlook the many miracles occurring in middle America' - Yahoo Finance

Billionaire investing icon Warren Buffett, the CEO of Berkshire Hathaway (BRK-B, BRK-A), reiterated his “never bet against America” maxim on Saturday in his annual letter to shareholders.

“Today, with much of finance, media, government and tech located in coastal areas, it’s easy to overlook the many miracles occurring in middle America,” Buffett wrote in the widely-read letter.

The 90-year-old Omaha, Nebraska native, who has an estimated net worth of $92.7 billion, is widely considered the greatest investor of all time.

Buffett, who has long been bullish on America, wrote that “success stories abound throughout America.”

“Since our country’s birth, individuals with an idea, ambition and often just a pittance of capital have succeeded beyond their dreams by creating something new or by improving the customer’s experience with something old,” he said.

In his letter, he highlighted two communities that “provide stunning illustrations of the talent and ambition existing throughout our country.”

Omaha

To no surprise, he began with Omaha, sharing a story about a 1940 Omaha Central High School graduate named Jack Ringwalt. According to Buffett, Ringwalt started a property/casualty insurance company with $125,000 called National Indemnity. This “pipsqueak operation” competed with the “big boys” by focusing on “odd-ball risks.”

“Jack was honest, shrewd, likeable and a bit quirky," Buffett wrote. "In particular, he disliked regulators. When he periodically became annoyed with their supervision, he would feel an urge to sell his company."

In 1967, after a 15-minute conversation, Ringwalt sold National Indemnity to Berkshire Hathaway on a handshake deal.

“I never asked for an audit," he said. "Today National Indemnity is the only company in the world prepared to insure certain giant risks. And, yes, it remains based in Omaha, a few miles from Berkshire’s home office."

Buffett pointed out that Berkshire has purchased four additional Omaha-based businesses, most famously the Nebraska Furniture Mart, founded by the legendary Rose “Mrs. B” Blumkin, a Russian immigrant who arrived unable to speak or read in English.

Knoxville

The next city he pointed to was Knoxville, Tennessee, where Berkshire now owns 100% of Clayton Homes and 38% of Pilot Trade Centers, with plans to own 80% by 2023.

The respective founders — Jim Clayton of Clayton Homes and “Big Jim” Haslam of Pilot Travel Centers, graduated from the University of Tennessee and chose to build their businesses in Knoxville.

“Neither had a meaningful amount of capital nor wealthy parents. But, so what? Today, Clayton and Pilot each have annual pre-tax earnings of more than $1 billion. Together they employ about 47,000 men and women,” Buffett wrote.

Buffett emphasized that there’s an “army of successful entrepreneurs who populate every part of our country.” What’s more, entrepreneurs need America’s “framework for prosperity” and America needs people willing to build businesses.

“In its brief 232 years of existence, however, there has been no incubator for unleashing human potential like America," he wrote. "Despite some severe interruptions, our country’s economic progress has been breathtaking. Beyond that, we retain our constitutional aspiration of becoming ‘a more perfect union.’ Progress on that front has been slow, uneven and often discouraging. We have, however, moved forward and will continue to do so. Our unwavering conclusion: Never bet against America."

U.S. Attorney Chapa Lopez came to the job with a significant amount of experience that prepared her to lead the MDFL. Previously, she served on active duty as a United States Army Officer, achieving the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.  In April of 2000, she joined the USAO-MDFL as an Assistant United States Attorney as a narcotics prosecutor, working to dismantle transnational drug trafficking organizations. Immediately prior to serving as U.S. Attorney, Chapa Lopez served as DOJ Deputy Attaché at the U.S. Embassy in Mexico, working closely with Mexican Justice and Law Enforcement counterparts, as well as other international stakeholders, to disrupt cross-border crime.

“Maria Chapa Lopez rendered good and faithful service as United States Attorney for the Middle District of Florida. In her dealings with the Court, Ms. Lopez always represented the United States with the utmost professionalism. The Court wishes her well in her future endeavors” said Timothy J. Corrigan, Chief Judge, Middle District of Florida.

DEA Special Agent in Charge Keith Weis commends USA Chapa Lopez for her outstanding leadership. “During her tenure, she has supported all the agencies focused on reducing supplies of dangerous drugs such as fentanyl, heroin, methamphetamines, diverted prescription drugs, cocaine and related violence impacting our Florida Communities,” said SAC Weis. “She has been instrumental in dismantling significant transnational criminal organizations narcotics smuggling and money laundering operations from South America to shores of the United States. USA Chapa Lopez has been extremely dedicated to enforcing the rule of law with the tireless goal of helping those communities and families adversely affected by illicit drug distribution. The DEA wishes USA Chapa Lopez the best in her next endeavors, she is an invaluable leader and friend who will be greatly missed by law enforcement.”

“U.S. Attorney Maria Chapa López has been a quintessential partner in combatting violent crime throughout the Middle District Florida for more than 20 years. On behalf of the women and men of the ATF Tampa Field Division, I thank Mrs. Chapa López for her service to the United States. Her leadership as United States Attorney made our communities safer. You will be missed,” said ATF Special Agent in Charge Craig W. Saier.

“Under the leadership of United States Attorney Maria Chapa Lopez, the law enforcement community across the Middle District of Florida has become more united and collaborative. Her commitment to protect the most vulnerable in our communities as well as the way she led her office to take on emerging threats is just part of the legacy she leaves. We wish you all the best in your next chapter Maria.” said Kevin Sibley, Acting Special Agent in Charge for Homeland Security Investigations.

“It has truly been an honor and a privilege working alongside US Attorney Maria Chapa Lopez over the past three years protecting and defending the Middle District of Florida,” said Sheriff Chad Chronister, Hillsborough County. “I am saddened to see her leave, but truly grateful for the dedication she has put into causes that affect our Hillsborough County residents. Through our partnership, we have worked to combat issues of both opioid abuse and human trafficking throughout our state, bringing drug dealers responsible for fatal overdoses to justice and putting behind bars those who seek to buy or profit off of the exchange of another individual’s body for sex. I look forward to continuing the work we have started together as she moves on to the next step in, what is sure to be, a continuously rewarding career in service.”

“The St. Petersburg Police Department has enjoyed a cooperative and mutually supportive relationship with our valued criminal justice partners at the Department of Justice, led by U.S. Attorney Maria Chapa Lopez,” said Chief Anthony Holloway, St. Petersburg Police Department. “The DOJ is staffed with tremendously talented members and I am proud of our collective achievements and the significant progress that has been made toward improving the lives of individuals in our community through better public safety and police protection and most recently for the support of the Tampa Bay Human Trafficking Task Force. I look forward to the opportunity to work together someday soon and seeing her many future accomplishments.”

“U.S. Attorney Maria Chapa Lopez has truly made Manatee County a safer place to live,” said Sheriff Rick Wells. “Under her leadership, several high-profile drug dealers and gang members have been removed from our community. I will be forever indebted to her and the commitment she made to prosecute those responsible for distributing fentanyl throughout Manatee County. She will be greatly missed, and I wish her all the best in her future endeavors.”

“We’ve had a productive and strong working relationship with U.S. Attorney Maria Chapa Lopez.  Her reputation is one of being committed to her work and has shown through her accomplishments during her appointment. We are grateful to have had the opportunity to work with her,” said Sheriff Bob Gualtieri, Pinellas County.

“Maria Chapa Lopez led undeniable efforts that resulted in fewer victims of crime and ensuring the safety of our neighborhoods,” said Chief Brian Dugan, Tampa Police Department. “Although she will be missed, our law enforcement agents are better prepared and trained to take on any criminal element due to her years of dedicated service.”

“U.S. Attorney Maria Chapa Lopez has done an outstanding job protecting the citizens of the Middle District of Florida,” said Sheriff Christopher Nocco, Pasco County. “From terrorism to illegal pharmaceuticals, violent crime, and human trafficking, her leadership to prosecute criminals and build coalitions worked to make Pasco, along with all of Tampa Bay, a safer community.”

“Our relationship with the Middle District of Florida is paramount to the cycle of success needed to combat and counter transnational organized crime.  I thank my colleague, Ms. Maria Chapa Lopez, for her professionalism and dutiful service as US Attorney for the past three years, and deeply value her leadership and gracious friendship. We look forward to continuing our collaboration with her successor and I wish Maria the very best,” said Rear Adm. Eric C. Jones, Seventh District Commander.

“The U.S. Attorney’s Office is a key partner with U.S. Probation. Under Maria’s leadership, the communication between our agencies has flourished. The U.S. Attorney’s Office has been a responsive and reliable partner in our promotion of the fair administration of justice,” said Joe Collins, Chief U.S. Probation Officer.

“Maria has been a dedicated partner and a trusted ally who has served the Middle District of Florida with honor and distinction,” said State Attorney Melissa Nelson of the Fourth Judicial Circuit. “She undoubtedly will continue to do great things in her community.”

Upon the U.S. Attorney’s resignation, Karin Hoppmann, who served as Ms. Chapa Lopez’s First Assistant U.S. Attorney, will become Acting United States Attorney for the Middle District of Florida by virtue of the Vacancies Reform Act. Ms. Hoppmann becomes Acting U.S. Attorney for up to 300 days, and she will serve in that position until such time as an Interim U.S. Attorney is appointed or the President nominates and the United States Senate confirms a new United States Attorney.

ODU men's basketball outlasts Middle Tennessee, 67-61 - wtkr.com

NORFOLK, Va. – The Old Dominion men's basketball team (13-6, 9-4 C-USA) outlasted Middle Tennessee (5-14, 3-10 C-USA) by a 67-61 score on Friday night at Chartway Arena. ODU has now won four of its last five games, as well as 11 of its last 15.

After trailing by 14 at the half, the Blue Raiders utilized an 11-6 run to cut their deficit to single digits, 38-29, at the 17:36 mark of the second half. Old Dominion answered right back with a 13-2 run, pushing its lead to 20 (the largest of the contest), 51-31, with 13:03 to play, forcing a Middle Tennessee timeout. The Blue Raiders again chipped away at the lead, engineering a 22-9 run to pull within seven, 60-53, with 1:46 remaining in regulation.

A deep Jaylin Hunter trey with 1:18 to play, pushed the Monarchs lead back to double digits, 63-53. Middle Tennessee mounted one late push, scoring eight of the game's next 10 points to pull within four, 65-61, at the 23 second mark.

On the pursuing possession, Hunter found Kalu Ezikpe, who broke loose from MT's full court pressure for an easy two to seal the deal on ODU's six-point victory on Friday night in Norfolk.

Ezikpe turned in a double-double, finishing with 14 points and a game-high 13 rebounds. Malik Curry also scored 14 points, to compliment five rebounds, four assists, three steals and two blocks. Hunter went for 10 points, three rebounds and three steals. All eight Monarchs that played scored.

"We are very happy to get the win," said ODU head coach Jeff Jones. "We didn't play great, but we played well enough. We had some guys that I thought really competed hard for us. Moving forward, we must all remain on the same page and hopefully play at a higher level. Middle Tennessee pushed us and we had to work for this win tonight. We will need to be better tomorrow night."

For the contest, Old Dominion held advantages for points in the paint (38-22) and points off turnovers (19-13). The Monarchs led for 32:40 of the possible 40 minutes.

Midway through the first half, the game remained deadlocked at 14 apiece. Three Monarch steals helped spark a 12-0 run, as ODU claimed a 26-14 lead at the 3:21 mark. During that run, the Blue Raiders were held without a field goal for a total of 6:56. Ultimately, Old Dominion ended the half on an 18-4 run, claiming a 32-18 lead at halftime.

The Monarchs shot 50% (14-28) from the floor and held advantages for points off turnovers (15-5), as well as points in the paint (20-12) in the opening frame. Old Dominion's defense held MT to 36.4% (8-22) shooting from the floor in the first half.

Curry led the way for ODU in the opening 20 minutes, scoring a half high seven points to go along with a half high three steals.

Old Dominion has won its last three contests against the Blue Raiders.

Xavier Green was honored prior to Friday night's game for surpassing the 1,000-point milestone in ODU's last home game.

Old Dominion will be right back in action tomorrow, Saturday, Feb. 26 against Middle Tennessee. Saturday night's game will mark the last home game of the regular season for the Monarchs. Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m. at Chartway Arena and the game will be streamed on ESPN+.

Old Dominion enters Saturday night's contest with an 8-1 record at home for the season. Since 2014-15, the Monarchs are 85-17 (83.2%) when playing at Chartway Arena.

Lakers add front court depth, sign Damian Jones to 10-day contract - Yahoo Sports

worldinmiddleeast.blogspot.com

Damian Jones started the season in Phoenix but could never consistently break into the rotation behind players such as Deandre Ayton, Frank Kaminsky, Jae Crowder, and Dario Saric.

However, without Anthony Davis through mid-March, the Lakers are looking for help at the four, so they have signed Jones to a 10-day contract, the team announced Friday.

Jones brings athleticism to the front line, something the Lakers need more of without Davis’ versatility. Marc Gasol starts at center, and the Lakers have Montrezl Harrell off the bench, but without Davis they have been shorthanded.

That the Lakers went with someone on a 10-day contract — which can be extended with a second 10-day after the first — speaks to them keeping their roster flexibility open as they head into the trade deadline and buyout season. The Lakers have a couple of open roster spots after waiving Quinn Cook, however, they are limited in their options due to being hard-capped (they only have about $1.6 million to spend).

Jones was drafted by the Warriors out of Vanderbilt with the 30th pick back in 2016. He spent three seasons with Golden State before being traded to Atlanta. He had signed as a free agent with Phoenix for this season. He averaged 1.6 points and 1.3 rebounds a game in limited minutes with the Suns.

Front Range Rail Commission Sees Cautionary Tale In RTD's FasTracks — And Opportunity - Colorado Public Radio

worldinmiddleeast.blogspot.com

The two projects could end up being intertwined. One potential route would put Front Range rail through Longmont and Boulder, which could reduce costs for RTD’s B Line. The two parties are discussing formalizing their relationship, possibly through a memorandum of understanding, said Bill Van Meter, RTD’s assistant general manager for planning.

"We recognize we can help the state and Front Range Passenger Rail,” Van Meter said. “And we recognize, in return, that can help us advance our FasTracks priorities."

Collaborating with RTD — and finishing the B Line — is very important to legislative leaders, Souby said.

“I think it’s essential that at least the commission and RTD get our act together and pledge that we’re going to work this out in a way that we both benefit from,” he said.

But, he added, “These aren't problems. These are opportunities.”

Girl, 12, sold stun guns at Tampa middle school, police say - Tampa Bay Times

TAMPA — A 12-year-old Coleman Middle School student is accused of selling stun guns to her fellow students, police say.

The student was arrested Friday on a charge of possession of a weapon on school property. The investigation started earlier that day when a school staffer told administrators that the 12-year-old had a stun gun with her on the campus at 1724 S Manhattan Ave.

The school resource officer took her out of class and spoke to her. The girl told the officer that she had bought five stun guns online, brought them to school and sold them to students, according to Tampa police.

She said she sold three of them on Thursday, police said, and she had two Vipertek stun-guns with her when the officer spoke to her Friday. Police did not say how much she sold them for, but the cost of Vipertek stun devices starts at $9.99 on Amazon.

No threats were made against anyone or against the school in this case, police said.

The student was arrested and taken to the Hillsborough Juvenile Detention Center. The Tampa Bay Times is withholding the name of the girl because of her age.

The school resource officer is contacting the parents of the students who bought the stun guns, or the students themselves, to recover them and use them as evidence.

A middle schooler was insecure about his haircut. So his principal fixed it himself instead of disciplining the boy for wearing a hat - CNN

Want more inspiring, positive news? Sign up for The Good Stuff, a newsletter for the good in life. It will brighten your inbox every Saturday morning.
Jason Smith, the middle school principal at Stonybrook Intermediate and Middle School in Indianapolis, Indiana, understood that feeling. And that's why it was a no-brainer to jump into action for one of his students, Anthony Moore.
Moore was wearing a hat, which is against the school's dress code. After the student spoke with a school dean for about 30 minutes, Smith was asked to step in.
"I sat across from him and asked, 'What's wrong? Why are you being defiant, why are you refusing to take your hat off? It's a pretty simple request,'" Smith said. "And he explained that his parents took him to get a haircut and he didn't like the results."
Smith said he and the dean thought his hair looked fine. "But you know he's a 13 [or] 14-year-old kid, and we know social acceptance is more important than adult acceptance," he said.
"I told him, 'Look, I've been cutting hair since I was your age,' and I showed him pictures of my son's haircuts that I did and some of me cutting hair in college. And I said, 'If I run home and get my clippers and fix your line, will you go back to class?'" Smith said. "He hesitated but then he said yes."
So in the snow, Smith drove back home to get his clippers and brought them to his office to line Moore's head up while his parents were called for consent to touch up his hair.
Tawanda Johnson, Moore's mom, said she thought the gesture was wonderful.
"He (Smith) handled it very well to keep him from getting in trouble at school," she said. "I'm just glad that he was able to handle that without ... being put in in-school suspension."
"He didn't say straight out, but I feel like he didn't want to be laughed at," Smith said. "The barbershop and hair cuts as Black males is very important in the community and looking your best and being sharp -- it's just a cultural aspect."
"Just from my being a Black male myself and coming through that culture and you know, I really think girls matter at that age, which [means] appearance then could matter. He was scared he was going to be laughed at and we were pretty sure no one would notice, but he was looking through his lens," Smith said.
