SEAFORD, NY — The thought of students wearing face masks behind plexiglass in art and music classes would have been considered a world apart from creative exploration one year ago, but students at Seaford Middle School are donning their PPE and practicing their social distancing while doing just that. Though classes are differently structured this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, students are still able to tap into their creativity in the Digital Paint and Music in Our Lives classes, according to a school district news release.
In the Digital Paint class, which is taught by Stephanie Luca, sixth grade students explore traditional artistic techniques in a modern way, using the Fresh Paint program on their laptops to create digital images that mirror drawings, oil and watercolor paintings, and other media, which allows them to remain safe as they work on their own devices instead of sharing art supplies, district officials said.
The students, who can choose between using their fingers or a stylus pen to create their masterpieces, have worked on several projects already, including a cartoon self-portrait and comic strip, as well as drawings or paintings of a sunset, according to Ms. Luca. Students are also learning about perspectives for landscape pieces by creating artwork with a foreground, middle ground and background, the news release states.
Visual media is not the only area where students are learning to express their creative sides.
For the Music in Our Lives class, which is taught by Nick Coacci, students began the year analyzing the importance of music in silent films before moving on to Golden Age movies like "The Wizard of Oz" and Disney's "Fantasia," which provided sources of music for the sixth graders to study, the news release states. One activity that students enjoy is listening to a piece of music and writing a story to accompany it and the students "write what they hear" and then complete the project with their own illustrations, according to Coacci.
