School board to meet on Tuesday
The Montgomery County Board of Education will meet on Tuesday to discuss several policy changes and the renaming of Col. E. Brooke Lee Middle School in Silver Spring.
The meeting is scheduled to start at noon and will be held virtually.
The school board will discuss a possible change to the policy that dictates when the next school year’s calendar must be adopted. The school board has previously said that it needs more time to develop the next calendar due to the coronavirus pandemic. Usually, the 2021-2022 calendar would have been finalized by the end of the year.
The school board will also discuss possible changes to the policy that determine when students are eligible for extracurricular activities.
Also during Tuesday’s meeting, the school board is set to finalize the new name for Lee Middle School. A renaming process for Lee began last year after county officials said it was necessary due to its namesake’s ties to slavery and racism.
The school board proposed three namesakes for the school, all prominent Black activists or community leaders:
- Josiah Henson, who was enslaved in Montgomery County before obtaining freedom and becoming an author and abolitionist
- Katherine Johnson, a mathematician credited with making the calculations that helped Americans land on the moon in 1969
- Odessa Shannon, the first Black woman elected to public office in Montgomery County.
The new name for Lee Middle School will take effect on the birthdate of the person for whom it is renamed.
Henson’s birthday was June 15, 1789; Johnson’s Aug. 26, 1918; and Shannon’s July 4, 1928.
Lee was a prominent Maryland politician and founded the county’s Planning Department. He created Montgomery County’s first land use and zoning system, but historians say he purposely attached racially restrictive policies that prohibited Black people from buying or renting homes in subdivisions.
