Mauriceville Elementary, Middle to remain closed Monday - Beaumont Enterprise

Two schools in the vicinity of a train derailment that occurred Thursday morning will remain closed on Monday, after officials determined that workers from the railroad company would still be in the process of removing hazardous chemicals that were being transported when the derailment occurred.

“The railroad company will be removing two cars that contain a hazardous material and the area around the derailment and removal site will be evacuated,” the district said in a statement.

“The district expected our Mauriceville schools to be able to return to regular classes on Monday,” Superintendent Stacey Brister said. “We regret this is not the case.”

Students will continue classes virtually, and are expected to return to campus on Tuesday.

LC-M High School students who are bus riders will also have to find alternate transportation, as buses will continue to be prohibited in the area on Monday.

Students who can not find alternate routes can attend school online.

It was not immediately clear which of the chemicals has yet to be removed.

Two tankers ruptured in the incident were carrying monoethanolamine, a corrosive chemical that is used in cosmetics and as a feedstock in the production of detergents and polishes.

Orange County Emergency Management Officials identified the contents in a statement Friday afternoon.

“The leaks were contained, and the product was containerized for proper disposal,” the statement said. “As the product from these cars present hazards related to direct contact, and not respiratory exposure, the product release was mitigated without harm to the general public.”

Two other hazardous materials being carried by three tankers were also identified. They include ethylene oxide, which is described by a government website as a “flammable colorless gas” that is used to produce other chemicals such as antifreeze and in smaller amounts as a pesticide and sterilizing agent.

It is highly toxic if inhaled, and extremely flammable.

The third hazardous material identified in the derailment is propylene oxide, a volatile and highly flammable liquid that is used as a component in several types of foams for the appliance and automotive industries.

All hazardous materials are in the process of being removed, the Orange County Sheriff’s Office said Friday.

A spokesman said Friday that there was no imminent risk from the materials.

Four non-hazardous tank cars were also breached, leaking what the Friday statement from emergency personnel described as a “petroleum product that did not represent a health risk to the general population.”
