LAKELAND, Fla. — Renovations are underway for Kathleen Middle School.
“We’re really excited and the students are grateful,” said principal Sheila Gregory.
The campus was damaged by a tornado last October. Classrooms and administrative offices were destroyed.
“It was really scary walking into that,” explained Pope. “Luckily, it happened at night so no one was here but when we got in, it looked like a war zone.”
Gregory joined Kathleen Middle teachers in expressing how proud they are of their students.
“They made a documentary about it where they were able to express their experience,” said television production teacher, Terri Yearicks. “It’s good to be back in the classroom. The kids are happy about the new space.”
So far, renovations have run up a $5 million bill but some say the history behind the school makes it all worth it.
“The school was first built in 1928 and for most, it was the first school they were able to attend in this area,” said a staff member.
The campus is expected to be completed December 2021, but Gregory told Bay News 9 that the students are currently able to attend class with no interruptions.
