Edgar Jeffrey Humphrey

An Ocala man is accused of battering a woman in front of her four children because she was packing up to leave him.

A Marion County sheriff’s deputy responded to the incident location recently and found the victim visibly upset and with dirt and sand on her back, feet and pants. She told the deputy she had been in a verbal altercation with 48-year-old Edgar Jeffrey Humphrey.

The victim said she was packing her vehicle to leave the residence when Humphrey arrived. She said he demanded she turn over the keys to her vehicle and forcibly removed them from her possession and smashed them on the ground. The deputy observed the broken key fob, according to the sheriff’s office report.

The victim said Humphrey then threw her to the ground and started punching her with his fist. She said he punched her at least twice – once in the ear and once in the mouth. The deputy observed the victim had a red and swollen lip, as well as a red bruise on her neck from where Humphrey appeared to have tried to choke her, the report said.

The victim said, out of anger, she took a tire iron out of her vehicle and scratched Humphrey’s vehicle. She said this angered him further, and he retrieved a firearm from the residence. The victim said she never saw the firearm and he didn’t threaten her with it, but she knew he had it in the back of his pants, under his shirt, according to the report.

The victim said the incident was witnessed by her four children. All four provided similar stories to the victim. They said they heard Humphrey and the victim arguing and saw him hitting her, the report said.

Humphrey also called law enforcement about the scratches to his vehicle and the deputy met him at his place of employment. After being read his Miranda warning, Humphrey said he arrived at the residence and the victim was loading her vehicle. He said they got into an argument about her leaving, according to the report.

Humphrey said the victim was enraged and grabbed a tire iron from her vehicle. He said he tried to remove the tire iron from the victim’s hands and, in doing so, she yanked the tire iron and hit herself in the mouth. Humphrey said the victim then scratched his vehicle with the tire iron. He denied hitting the victim, the report said.

Due to the victim’s injuries, the statements of the victim and the juvenile witnesses, and Humphrey’s acknowledgement of an argument, Humphrey was arrested and charged with simple domestic battery. He was taken to the Marion County Jail, where he was released on $1,000 bond. He is scheduled to appear in Marion County Court on Jan. 6.
