CLINTON — Instruction at Clinton Middle School has shifted from hybrid to remote after it was learned over the weekend that one teacher there tested positive for COVID-19.
According to a fourth correspondence to the community by Dr. Stephen L. Grimm, superintendent, due to a high number of teacher absences as a result of them being ordered by the county Health Department to be quarantined, the district was unable to find enough substitute coverage for 10 teachers at the middle school.
Letters were posted on the www.ccs.edu website over the weekend about two students — one at the high school and one at the middle school — as well as a middle school teacher who had tested positive for COVID-19. A third correspondence indicated that the school district had just been informed that another teacher, who teaches classes at both the middle and high schools, also tested positive.
“Even with the teachers streaming into the classes, we cannot find enough people even to simply supervise the in-person students while they participate with the streaming teacher. It is because of the lack of ability to find this coverage that I am shifting our instruction from in-person to remote instruction for the middle school only for this week from Tuesday, Oct. 13 through Friday, Oct. 16,” said Grimm in a statement.
The superintendent said it was not due to safety reasons for the school that instruction shifted to remote, but for the lack of substitutes available on such short notice.
“We will work this week to find additional substitutes in preparation for the week of Oct. 19, which will still require the need for substitutes for the quarantined teachers,” he said. “We will inform you by the end of the week if we are still unable to find enough subs for next week.”
“Sports are unaffected by this and you should report to school for your practices and games as per your coach,” Grimm said. “Be on the look-out for additional information from your teachers or school.”
The elementary and high schools are operating as normal.
“I am very sorry for any inconvenience this may cause for everyone involved, however, we have been preparing for such potential scenarios including remote instruction, and we are ready to do our best during these challenging times,” Grimm said.
