Blake Bass Middle School redistricting map option 1

The parent survey for the new middle school student district has been completed, and Board of Education members will review the responses ahead of the decision on the new district lines.

Two proposed maps of the new middle school student district were presented at the Coweta County Board of Education’s regular monthly meeting Aug. 11.

The new middle school, located on Shaw Road, is scheduled to open in August 2021. The new middle school district will be formed out of portions of the current Arnall Middle School, Madras Middle School and Lee Middle School student districts.

The Board of Education is expected to adopt a district map for the new school in November or December, and the new district lines will go into effect for the 2021-22 school year.

“My hope would be either in November or by December at the latest to bring you a recommendation for the middle school redistricting and the new lines in light of the opening of the new middle school in August 2021,” Superintendent Evan Horton said at October’s Board of Education meeting.

Parents were able to leave comments on a survey, which was open online from August through the beginning of October.

The results from the attendance zone survey were:

  • 16 percent preferred option 1
  • 19 percent preferred option 2
  • 32 percent were okay with either or didn’t have an opinion
  • 10 percent disagreed with both options
  • 23 percent left “other” comments

The results from the grandfathering policy proposal survey were:

  • 30 percent liked, approved, or stated the proposal was fair
  • 38 percent had no comment
  • 10 percent disliked
  • 22 percent left “other” comments

The two district maps (Option 1 and Option 2) can be found on the schools’ websites and at www.cowetaschools.net , along with a copy of a grandfathering proposal for affected seventh grade (rising eighth grade) students.

A list of streets and neighborhoods incorporated into the specific map options are attached to the maps.

The map proposals came out of the Shaw Road middle school parent and faculty district line working committee, which reviewed all aspects of school district lines, including population density and demographic data, transportation and natural boundaries for the new school district.

The committee was made up of parents from Arnall, Lee and Madras middle schools, and school system employees that met during January and February to consider possible district lines and the grandfathering guidelines submitted for review.

“I’d like to tell you the committee did an excellent job, and they really worked well together as a team,” said Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources Vince Bass at the August board meeting. “I would like to personally commend them as a group for the time and the effort they put into this project.”

Two maps have been proposed for consideration, both of which affect approximately 175 students from Arnall Middle School, 185 students from Lee Middle School and 400-425 students from Madras Middle School.

“Both options will put the middle schools involved in very good standing and fairly equal populations,” said Bass. “All of our middle schools would be around the 700-800 mark — all fairly equal in size.”

Both maps broadly propose to redistrict northern portions of the current Lee and Arnall districts closest to the location of the new middle school on Shaw Road, follow Interstate 85 as a natural boundary for much of the district, and incorporate all portions of Madras’ district east of I-85 and various Madras neighborhoods just to the west of I-85.

Projected enrollment of the new middle school and all of Coweta County’s middle schools, can be found here .

The committee has also proposed a student grandfathering policy which would allow current seventh grade students (rising eighth grade students) and their siblings to remain at their current school if parents provide transportation.
