MAPLEWOOD, NJ — More than 150 people gathered on the steps of Maplewood Town Hall for a Shofar service to honor the late Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

Members of the crowd brought out posters with phrases like “We Must Now Be Ruthless” and “Dissent is Patriotic” to celebrate Justice Ginsburg's life. The service was organized by SOMA Justice together with North Jersey Pride and SOMA Action. SOMA Justice began the program with a call to honor the memory of the work Justice Ginsburg did during her life. Each of the speakers called for attendees to stay committed to the fight against racism, sexism and anti-Semitism through this year and into 2021/5781.

The service began with the blowing of the shofar and the recitation of the Mourner’s Kaddish. Those who gathered were asked to stand and light their candles or turn on their lanterns as the prayer was read aloud.

Melissa Renny, Secretary for SOMA Justice and Ritu Pancholy, President of SOMA Action, implored members of the community to get involved in local organizing, especially in the 44 days leading up to the election. Pancholy highlighted the work phone banking in swing NC, AZ, ME that SOMA Action is doing to flip their senate seats.

Justice Ginsburg passed away Friday due to complications from pancreatic cancer at age 87. She spent 27 years on the Supreme Court and became the second female justice when she was appointed by President Clinton in 1993.
