2 middle schools in Cabell County closed until Oct. 8 due to COVID-19 - WSAZ

UPDATE 9/24/20 @ 10:10 p.m.

CABELL COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) – Two middle schools in Cabell County will transition to all remote/virtual learning for two weeks starting Friday after two student athletes tested positive for COVID-19.

Cabell County Schools made that announcement Thursday night, saying Milton Middle and Huntington East Middle schools both will remain closed to in-person classes until Oct. 8.

According to school officials, two student athletes who tested positive for COVID-19 last attended class Tuesday.

One of the Milton Middle students is on the football team, and all students at both schools will need to stay home as contact tracing is underway, school officials say.

Huntington Middle School and Milton Middle School played a football game Monday, according to school officials.

ORIGINAL STORY

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) – One hundred twenty students and about 14 staff members at Huntington East Middle School are being told they have to quarantine for 14 days after two students tested positive for COVID-19.

Cabell County Schools spokesperson Jedd Flowers made that announcement Thursday, saying the students who tested positive are in the Monday-Tuesday group.

Parents are in the process of being contacted.

Flowers says the district learned Sunday that another student at the same middle school had tested positive for the virus, but that student hasn’t been at the school since Sept. 10.

Flowers said eight staff members were quarantined for that original case, and those staff members will be returning to work Friday.

The students being quarantined had classes with the two students who tested positive this week.

Extracurricular activities were cancelled as a precaution.

Flowers says contact tracing is being done.

Cabell County Executive Director of Middle Schools Justin Boggs says an abundance of safety measures are in place in the school, including deep cleaning, sanitizing, having kids and teachers wear masks, and desk shields.

“It is difficult during a pandemic to prevent something like this from happening, and we have to react appropriately,” Boggs said.

Sheila McCallister has a grandson who goes to the school there. She says she had to pick him up at school Thursday after he started feeling nauseous.

“He doesn’t have a cough,” she said. “He doesn’t have a fever. He just has a stomach ache and nausea, and they told me it was symptoms of COVID-19. I don’t think he’s too sick, but what concerns me is, if he was exposed to it, how long ago has it been?”

She says she was told if her grandson’s problems don’t persist, he can go back to school after 24 hours.

Flowers also says having to quarantine so many staff members is stretching their resources and making it difficult to find substitute teachers.
