New London — The school board on Thursday approved the promotion of New London native Chris Vamvakides to the role of director at Bennie Dover Jackson Multi-Magnet Middle School, a hire that ensures top leadership positions in the district are in place to start the new school year.
Over the last several months, the district has hired a new human resources director, a director of adult education and filled open director positions at both the high school and Nathan Hale Arts Magnet School.
Vamvakides, last summer, was hired to serve as the new assistant director at the middle school under Director Jose A. Ortiz. Ortiz in July was hired to fill the vacant position of director of New London Multi-Magnet High School Campus. Laurelle Texidor, who had been serving as interim director at the high school, took over as principal at Nathan Hale Arts Magnet School.
Prior to his hire in New London, Vamvakides served as assistant principal at Griswold Public Schools. In 2008, he started his career at New London High School, where he was a coordinator of alternative education. He later taught social studies and served as athletic director. Vamvakides was also the summer school director from 2013 to 2017. He is a 2001 graduate of New London High School.
The school board voted unanimously to approve Vamvakides' appointment following an executive session.
“Mr. Vamvakides, welcome. It’s great to have you back ... to continue in your role at the Bennie Dover Multi-Magnet Middle School,” Board of Education President Regina Mosley said.
